Brenden Benoit allegedly was lured to a wooded area in Lake View, NY, by three young women, where three young men whom they had earlier dropped off there were lying in wait. Benoit allegedly was punched by one of the young men. When the victim attempted to enter the vehicle, possibly for safety, he was allegedly stabbed multiple times in one of his legs, by a different young man. At some point, he was left in the woods.
The person who allegedly stabbed Brenden Benoit has been charged with manslaughter, while the rest have been charged with assault. The reason given behind the lesser charges for the alleged conspirators is that, while they knew they were conspiring for an assault, they did not anticipate the stabbing nor the death of Benoit. Sources have said the assault conspiracy can be proved beyond reasonable doubt, but not any charges beyond that, at the time of the statement. Charges may be amended, added, lessened, etc..
