Are you talking about the Hoboken accident a month or two ago? That was New Jersey Transit (NJT), this is the Long Island Railroad (LIRR).

seems like the front car is the one that left the tracks all others on the rails

Sounds like brake stuff - was slowing down but hit in the end block and derailed..

came up like 12 feet

I've been on these trains when I visited NYC over thanksgiving. What causes a train derailment? Is it as simple as a rock on the tracks or does something catastrophic have to happen to the tracks?

This one is not really a derailment. It was more like (if in a car ) hitting a wall in a parking lot at slow speed and your tire gets messed up.

It hit the bumper cause it did not stop so the first set of wheels (only one set in this one) lost contact with the rail.

Or a better way to put it would be the wheels coming off the track was not causation -( inability to stop was the cause of incident) and as a consequence of that-- one set of wheels are off the rails.

It is more like a crash --not really a derailment at all cause it happened after something else , if that makes sense??( More like not aligned any longer!)

LIRR Derailment Latest: Investigation Underway, Officials Could Be in Brooklyn a Week
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board arrived in Brooklyn on Wednesday night.

<snipped>
“While the injuries from this morning’s accident were limited in their severity, accidents that have involved LIRR trains over the past decade are troubling the Council and our fellow riders,” Epstein said in a statement.
