The workers were using heavy equipment to dig at Clarkson Ave. by E. 48th St., near the grounds of the Kingsboro Psychiatric Center in East Flatbush at about 1 p.m. when they found a skull, arm and leg bones. The remains were buried 13 feet underground.

The human remains unearthed by construction workers near the Kingsboro Psychiatric Center in East Flatbush appear to be from a forgotten cemetery and are not evidence of a crime, the NYPD said Tuesday.

The bones were identified by a forensic anthropologist with the city medical examiner’s office as human and from at least two individuals, officials said.

“Right now, we think this is a disinterment of a burial site,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said. “We have no leads as far as this is foul play, at all. This looks like these are old bones.”

Hospital facilities have occupied the sprawling site on the north side of Clarkson for decades. The Kings County Lunatic Asylum opened in 1852 at the site, records show. Adjacent to the old asylum was an Alms House, and eventually more public facilities were built on the property.

The Brooklyn Eagle newspaper reported in 1912 that for decades unidentified deceased people were buried in a common grave known as Potter’s Field somewhere off Clarkson and that Alms House workers for a time were employed as grave diggers.

I am surprised how quickly police dismissed any foul play or inquiry, just because they are old bones. I know they are stretched to the limits in NY, but really? How old is old?

By the way Audrey Nerenberg was outpatient of this same Kingsboro Psychiatric Center went she went missing in 1977 (not that it is in any way related to the bones).

A bit more about that hospital:
In February 1989, state mental health officials investigated Kingsboro Psychiatric
Center in Brooklyn, New York for allegations that adolescents were using
abandoned rooms to have sex with each other and to do drugs. Steve Osborne,
spokesman for the State Office of Mental Health, which operated Kingsboro and
other state mental health centers, said the investigation revealed close to 40 incidents
of sex and drug use among the adolescents. Some of the staff that knew about the
sexual activities and drug use were suspended from work without pay. Mr.
Osborne said, ʺObviously supervision was not adequate if this was going on….We
found condoms, we found drug paraphernalia—crack and marijuana mostly.” Mr.
Osborne also said the state mental health department and Kingsboro officials began
the investigation on February 7, 1989 after discovering in January 1989 that children
between the ages of 5‐12 were involved in a “sex club” at the Western New York
Children’s Psychiatric Center. The investigation of this center revealed 19 incidents
of sexual abuse, 15 involving children and four involving three staff members.

Wow Alka good find.. this is a bit disturbing to me that they are not really looking into this a little further.. especially since as you mentioned that Audrey Nedenberg was missing and was known to me a patient of there.. If you have not posted this on her thread I will... I know her father actively still was looking for her at one point for many years.. I wonder if they know about this..

Also another thing I find odd is that they have not mentioned the approximate age of the bones...just really old.. what does that mean?? and they mention there was a burial site.. does that mean there are more skeletons there also??..or have there been other skeletons that have been found there that have not been mentioned before??

The article which I posted above was about 2 days after they found the bones, so I do not think they knew by that stage how old the bones really were. It is very possible that they could be from old paupers grave associated with Kinsgsboro Pshychiatric hospital as police are stating. Also, though I do not know feet measurements, it sounds like 13 feet under would be quite deep and not something you would dig hastingly or unnoticed when covering crime.

Information about Audrey Nerenberg - I have added it only as trivia information and I personally do not think bones are related to her case. Audrey went missing nearby her home and was very likely apprehended/kidnapped as her dad received ransom call for money next day.

Despite all this I would like to know too how old approximately bones were, especially as it appears to be from two people.

Yes Al Ka your right 13 feet does sound like a bit deep.. It would be interesting to know if the location of the bones was built up.. I have lived in my areafor about for over 40 yrs now and I remember when a lot of the streets were cobble stone and the side walks were much highere and there was a big step to the street and the streets and sidewalks keep getting built up over and over that now on my block the street and curb match and the water over flows to the sidewalk.. so it just makes me wonder about the 13 feet.. Like was it 13 feet when the bones were buried or after years of building has it become 13 feet.. I don't know if I have explained it correctly.. but I hope you get what I am trying to say... and yes since it is 2 people who are the.. and are they more?? hopefully they will someday give out an age.

Was there ever an update onthis and age on the bones or if they were male or female? I hate when they find remains or an unidentified body and it's in the news and then you never hear about it againo_O. So many articles never get follow ups that should.

I worked on the grounds of the Maine State Hospital/AMHI for years. There is rumor of a an unmarked cemetery located on the grounds. Lots of effort, time, money have gone into the search but it has still remained hidden. I would expect mostof the older state hospitals to have unknown cemeteries on their grounds. I think the 13 feet could either be additional dirt/fill brought in or even a possible mass grave. Any illness/epidemic would have spread like wildfire in those settings.

As an archeologist, that definitely sounds like an old burial site to me. Not all were registered with the city catasters, especially if it was family cemeteries.

Also, if the hospital is operating for a long time (we are talking about 100+ years), it is possible they have uncovered a burial from the hospital cemetery. Most hospitals/mental institutions had their own cemeteries for unclaimed or abandoned patients who passed.
