Dennis R Smalling Jr disappeared from a fishing vessel on Feb 7 of the same year, from 40 nautical miles off on Point Pleasant, NJ. I'm very unfamiliar with how water currents work in this area but if currents allowed for movement north, he could have made it to the red hook channel.
