A West Point cadet and a M4 rifle were reported missing when he failed to report to the academy's military skills competition over the weekend.

That's according to press release from the U.S. Military Academy, which said he is not believed to be a threat to the public "but may be a danger to himself."

The unnamed cadet is a member of the class of 2021. He was last seen on campus on Friday near 5:30 p.m. The chain of command reported him missing when he failed to report for the initial road march of the competition.

Widespread search underway for missing West Point cadet, academy says

<snip>"The cadet was last seen about 5:30 p.m. Friday on the grounds of the academy, which is located on the shore of the Hudson River in New York state. Fellow cadets began searching for him when he missed the road march, which was part of a military skills competition this weekend.

When they couldn’t find him, military police took up a search of the installation at about 1 a.m. on Saturday morning and kept up the search through the day, according to the release."<snip>

They said he has no bullets for his gun per HLN.

Drill team competions have no bullets in their rifles. It's a skill of how well they can handle their weapons.

I've seen many highly skilled USMC drill teams. They are unbelivable to watch their precision all in perfect unison.

Without a name (or at least a photo) how do they expect citizens or anyone at the academy not familiar with him to recognize him if he is seen somewhere? Is everyone just supposed to be looking for a guy carrying an M4?

I had the same thought, but I think perhaps since the cadet is in a fragile state of mind, that they don't want to apply more undue pressure? It sounds like a lot of resources have been deployed and I really hope they find the cadet and are able to get them the assistance they need.

Helicopters, drones and dive teams are being used to help find the cadet who has been missing since Friday.

West Point officials say 130 soldiers were brought in from Fort Drum, New York, helping ground searchers who have covered more than 2,000 acres in the West Point cantonment area.

The search has extended to the Hudson River, as well as lakes and ponds on West Point, where state police dive teams are using sonar technology.

The missing cadet is Kade Kurita, 20, from Gardena, CA.

West Point identifies cadet who went missing, says the search is still on

[...] Kurita’s garrison commander, Cecil Marson, according to a news release from the academy, “There has been no cell phone or financial activity in over 72 hours. This leads us to believe that he is still in the vicinity of West Point.” Officials have said that Kurita is not thought to have ammunition for his gun.
