"New York State Police are asking for the public's help cracking the stabbing death of a 29-year-old Long Island mother whose body was found in the snow just off the Southern State Parkway more than three decades ago.

Carolyn Smith, a mother of two young children who lived in Central Islip, vanished on her way to Newark Airport after leaving a co-worker's Bronx apartment on March 6, 1986. Her body was found the next day by a tow truck operator looking for a disabled vehicle on the eastbound side of the Southern State Parkway, not far from Bayshore. Smith's body, stabbed multiple times, was just off the side of the highway's south shoulder in the snow, authorities said."

Police say they were alerted to a body by a tow-truck operator looking for a disabled vehicle eastbound on the Southern State Parkway, east of Fifth Avenue in Bay Shore on Friday, March 7, 1986.

The operator observed the body of an African-American woman lying in the snow in a wooded area just off the south shoulder of the parkway, police say.

The preliminary investigation identified the victim as Carolyn Smith, 29, of 98 Orange Street in Central Islip. She had been stabbed multiple times, police say.

Further interviewing determined that Smith was employed by Digital Equipment Corporation in New York City and commuted to work in a 1985 white Ford LTD station wagon, according to police.

Smith was last seen the previous night, March 6, 1986, when she was visiting a co-worker’s apartment in the Bronx, police say. She left the apartment around 11 p.m. and was heading to Newark Airport, according to police.

Police say Smith’s Ford station wagon was found at the Taft Housing Projects, located at 114th Street and Park Avenue in Manhattan, on April 8, 1986.

Hundreds of leads have been pursued since the incident 33 years ago, but the investigation is still active, police say.

How far apart are all these locations? The co-workers apartment, the airport, where the car was found, where she lived and where she was found?

Did the tow truck driver find the vehicle he was looking for, or did someone make a false report so that the body would be found timely?

The drive to the airport - was it to pick someone up or to leave on a trip?

A black female working at DEC in NYC in 1986 would have be an anomaly for the times. What position did she hold? We’re her coworkers predominately male? The co-worker she visited - female or male?
