NY State Police Releases Photos of Lev Tahor Children Missing in Fallsburg

As reported on YWN, 14-year-old Yante Teller and her 12-year old brother Chaim Teller, were last seen by family early this past Shabbos morning (December 8, 2018) at their home in the town of Fallsburg.

The teens were last seen getting into a vehicle in front of the home at around 3:32AM, and it driving away.

The missing teens are two of the six children in a family that recently escaped from the Lev Tahor cult in Guatemala, following an intense international effort.

The authorities could not be more wrong IMO. This cult takes on the worst attributes of fundamentalist sects.

-Forcing girls to marry older men.
-Dictating who can marry who.
-Forcing women to dress in head to toe coverings which implies if they are assaulted by a man it's their fault. If a man has impure thoughts after seeing their uncovered body it's the woman's fault.
-Dressing girls as young as 3 in the same covering - well, let's just say it implies that they are then responsible for protecting their virtue.
-Restricting dietary intake to the point of malnourishment.
-Primitive housing.
-Demanding long hours of prayer.
-Banishing young people, particularily young men.
-Fleeing one country to another when authorities are about to investigate child abuse.

This is all MOO. Like other fundamentalist groups it's all about power, which the leader maintains through starving and exhausting the members and of course severe punishment for minor infractions.

It's highly likely that child abuse is rampant, as evidenced by numerous investigations launched, causing the cult to flee to other countries. But IMO that likely includes sexual abuse too.

Any group that feels it's being persecuted for its beliefs runs the risk of mass suicide. So far the Lev Tahor group has handled things through law suits but if the leader fears that they have been backed into a corner anything is possible. All MOO.

IMO Yante and Chaim left with cult members and maybe willingly; it takes time to "un brainwash" a person. I just hope NY LE will take this case seriously. I get that the law must tread softly when the issue is religious but there's no excuse when the crime is kidnapping - these kids are minors and as such cannot consent.

(1) Everyone must negate his or her mind and mind thoroughly and completely, to the leader of Lev Tahor.

2) They must subjugate soul, spirit, and will.

3) Each man accepts upon his descendants and descendant’s descendants until the end of all generations to be subjugated under the will of Lev Tahor’s leader.. this should be said openly to the leader himself.

4) Everyone must be ready at any time and moment of 24 hours of the day, whether on the Shabbath and Yom Tov, summer and winter, healthy or sick, to do the will of the leader.

5) Whether the person is a young man or an old man, virgins and women they must accept to do the will of the leader.

6) They must agree to throw away all his physical needs, including eating sleep and rest until he fulfills the desires the leader.

7) It is the obligation of each of them at the beginning of the morning prayers to recite and accept upon themselves all of the above with full mouth and supreme joy.

Yes, the father is referred to as the rosh yeshivah which means the head of the religious school - a very important aspect in the lives of Jewish children. The mother is referred to as Rebbetzin Teller which in this case means a female religious teacher.

So the parents play a huge role in the sect and their relationship to the leader is very close, think of it as royal lineage. It will be a priority for them to retrieve the children. The mother has been excommunicated (in cherem) so she no longer serves any purpose to the cult.

IMO that's the main reason we are hearing about this case. It's not different from fundamentalist Christian sects where most news sources are religious media - except when a blockbuster scandal occurs.

As a cultural (meaning not religious) Jew I hate these extreme religious groups. When I lived in Miami I knew families from other orthodox groups that were more mainstream and accepted. The individual members were well-meaning, good people who did their best to live according to their beliefs. I believe that to be true with the majority of Lev Tahor followers. It's the leaders and their henchmen who need to be monitored and IMO it's time to stop allowing them to hide their corruption and crimes behind the veil of religious freedom. MOO.

I was unaware of this cult until this story in today's NY Times:
