After missing Cleveland woman found dead in rental car in Queens, mom suspicious of victim’s abusive boyfriend

When cops responded to a stolen car alert at 2:10 a.m. on Sept. 20 they found the body of Charisse Shaheen, 57, slumped over in the front passenger seat of a Toyota Camry outside the Ravenswood Houses in Astoria.

She appeared to have suffered a serious head injury, cops said at the time. The city medical examiner is till working to determine her cause of death.

Connie Shaheen, 80, said her daughter suffered a head injury in May. She said that only last week did the NYPD identify her daughter, aided by medical records of the head injury she provided to them.

Connie Shaheen says she has an idea who is responsible for her daughter’s death: She suspects her daughter’s boyfriend, who she can’t reach and who she says was abusive, is somehow responsible.

Increasingly worried — and convinced the boyfriend was driving the car, had shut Charisse’s phone off and had done her harm — she reported the rental car stolen, leading to the eventual discovery of her daughter’s body.

On Sept. 15 she reported her daughter missing. The Cuyahoga County sheriff’s office went on to release a missing poster.

Connie Shaheen did some detective work of her own, finding on her daughter’s cell phone bill a record of 57 calls to a 718 number linked to the boyfriend’s mother and brother.

She also found in her daughter’s home an empty envelope with an Astoria address that turns out to be where the boyfriend’s mother and brother live.

“[Shaheen’s mother] called and said her daughter passed away,” the boyfriend’s Queens brother told The News.
