Flake, 31, barely looked at Smothers' family, who filled several rows.

"What was her last words? Did she beg you to stop?" relative Dominique Fowler Washington asked.

[...]

"We searched in the cold, all over highways, trash dumps, beaches, parks, you name it. We drove to different states," Washington said. "You had the audacity to ride along with my family, searching for Destini and lying to us."

[...]

Despite their pain and anguish, the family offered him the gift of forgiveness."

"I will not hate you because it will only kill me. So the only right thing to do is forgive you so that I can have peace," mother SLK said.

"The forgiveness is not for you killing my cousin. It's for my own salvation," a relative said.

“The depravity of this man’s actions left Destini Smothers’ family to agonize for months about her whereabouts and her two young children to grow up without a mother. I hope this sentence will afford some peace to Destini’s loved ones,” said Katz.

Smothers’ [FUNDRAISER] page described her as a loving mother.

“Destini Smothers loved her children more than anything,” the page said. “In family photos, she is often smiling and holding or kissing one of them. Videos of her show a bubbly, happy woman enjoying life with her children and family. Always dancing, singing, laughing …. that was Destini. Destini did not deserve what happened to her …. no one does. Her children do not deserve to grow up in a world without her.”
