DeWitt, N.Y. — A Jamesville man was supposed to pick up his daughter from work last week, but never showed up, DeWitt police said.

No one has heard from or seen David Benz since he left his home last Thursday, police said.

DeWitt police are now asking the public for helping finding Benz, 68.

Benz’s family became concerned and called police after he didn’t pick up his daughter from work at 5 p.m. Thursday. Benz is believed to have left his home in his car sometime prior to when he was supposed to get his daughter, but he left his cell phone at home and no one has been able to contact him, police said.

“Benz is known to frequent state forests and his vehicle may be in or near parking areas for trail heads in these types of locations,” DeWitt police said in a news release.

Benz drives a 2012 red, two-door Honda Civic car, with New York license plate number JGX3707.

“The DeWitt Police Department is actively attempting locate Mr. Benz and his vehicle and requests the public to be on the lookout for them,” the release said.

DeWitt police ask anyone with information about where Benz might be to call them at (315) 449-3640 or email [email protected], or call 911.

I hope he didn't go out for a hike and fall or have a heart attack or something.

Oh no. This makes me remember another missing man who didn't pick up his daughter that had such a sad ending - Tod DiMinno - and am praying that Mr Benz will be coming home safely ASAP.

Oh dear. I hope he's not having medical issues or something like that.

David Benz, 68, is believed to have left his home Oct. 20 without his cell phone, police said. He was supposed to pick up his daughter from work that day around 5 p.m.

Benz’s car was found in Wayne County a day after he was reported missing, according to deputies. The 2012 two-door, red Honda Civic was outside a Family Dollar on Whiskey Road in the town of Wolcott, police said.

Well, according to Google Maps there's not a lot in Wolcott, although it's probably the main town for that area. The Fsmily Dollar is located a few miles south of the little town, along a wide road with a few other big box type stores. It's quite spread out, and no immediate huge forests nearby.

Two photos below. One is a satellite aerial view of the town and area and the other is a Google street view from outside the Family Dollar on Whiskey Hill Road.

If he wanted to walk anywhere rural it would be a strange place to park here. And the stores are too far apart to walk them, you'd go in your car. If he had a medical incident in the parking lot or on the roads he'd have been seen/found by now.

I wonder if he parked here and was then picked up by someone else..?

Plenty of businesses along this road, so there must be some CCTV somewhere. I hope it's been looked at already.....time is ticking.

Wolcott (where his car was found) is 45 miles northwest of Dewitt (where he lives.)

Very strange he didn't take his phone with him though. That's a definite red flag for me.

It would be helpful to know what time his car was left at Family Dollar and where his daughter worked. There are a number of businesses north of Family Dollar after Whiskey Hill Road turns into New Hartford Street. Perhaps he locked his keys in the car and was headed to her place of employment on foot? MOO

I used to live near this area of NY. I'd be shocked if his daughter worked that far from DeWitt; it makes no sense. You have to drive through or around Syracuse (major city) to get from DeWitt to Wolcott. Why would that be his destination?

It's weird that the article states that his vehicle was found in one place and recovered at another place. A look at Google maps and AllTrails doesn't show any hiking areas in close proximity to the Family Dollar.

Yes, what's all that about? Is it a mistake in the article?

As far as I understood it, his vehicle was found at the Family Dollar parking lot.

I found it strange as well. I wondered if "his vehicle was found in Wayne County near a hiking trail" should have read "his vehicle was seen in Wayne County near a hiking trail." ? MOO

Could be, but as his car was found after being left at a Family Dollar parking lot, the fact that it may have been seen at a hiking trail doesn't matter too much, as you've got to work backwards from that last location. Although as I understood it, there weren't many hiking trails close by, and who saw the car near this supposed trail?

I do hope LE have swabbed the car to see if anyone's else's DNA and fingerprints were on the steering wheel, just in case.

But really, I do hate poorly written confused press articles that fog the situation.

I'm assuming this Family Dollar has interior cameras and can show if he ever went inside? If he did not visit the store, it seems odd to park his car here, unless he was having car trouble and just needed to pull off somewhere. Could it have been an honest mistake to leave his phone at home? I think if I forgot my phone at home and had car trouble, I'd probably go inside the Family Dollar and ask to borrow their landline. Of course, we have no idea if he had car trouble or if the phone was left at home on purpose, just thinking through some scenarios.
