Family of murder suspect "tried our best"
http://www.adn.com/nation/story/318145.html

"My father and I and our mother all tried our best to keep him in the facilities that he was hospitalized in over the many, many years of his illness, and they kept releasing him," said the brother, Robert Tarloff, standing outside his father's Staten Island home Sunday.
He would not elaborate on his brother's mental illness. (more at link)

The man accused of killing an Upper East Side therapist was in court two weeks before the slaying and had seen a psychiatrist, court records show. Records show that psychiatrist told a Queens criminal court judge that David Tarloff was not a danger to himself or to others.
The psychiatrist checked a form that states, "Tarloff does not require further psychiatric treatment at this time." Tarloff was later released. (more at link)

I would like to read what that brilliant psychiatrist has to say now!!! He didn't require further psychiatric treatment at this time! When did the psychiatrist think he would need it....after he hacked someone to death??? Two weeks before the murder.....Lord help us all.

This man's family probably did do everything that they could to keep him put away but I am here to tell you...if you are mentally ill.....a child....or elderly you are S.O.L. You have no worth in this world to the powers that be. You aren't productive so it is to bad for you.

Unfortunately, the protocol for determining danger to self or others makes it tough. Tarloff would not only have had to verbally expressed the intent to carry out harm against another, but had a detailed plan as well as the means to do so. In other words, even if he came across like raving lunatic during his therapy session, the hospital would not accept him as a patient unless he had explicitly stated he planned to "hack someone to death," "who he planned to hack to death," and "how he planned to accomplish said hacking." This really has more to do with insurance companies unwillingness to approve payments for hospital admissions, though they will claim it hearkens back to the days when the psychiatric community was excessive when it came to admitting patients to in-patient wards.

I Wonder how many mental health experts will be fighting over the state of his mind in this case

Joe, thanks for the update. I'm betting they'll be lined up. That article says he claims he was sexually abused by his grandmom and a neighbor when he was five. He also told his dad he's The Messiah. I wonder how they can weed through what is truth and what is fiction?

After five years, the case is finally going to trial. Jury selection is due to start Monday.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/03/0...at-cleaver-killing-nyc-therapist-after-years/

A jury was being chosen for Tarloff's trial in 2010 when he refused to leave a courthouse holding cell, ran nude around a psychiatric ward and was declared unfit for court, a finding separate from an insanity defense. Doctors said this summer his condition had improved enough to bring him to court again.
