A SUNY Cortland professor has reportedly been missing, according to a Facebook post by Beth Klein.

Dr. Muteb Alqahtani, a professor in SUNY Cortland’s childhood/early childhood education department, was last seen taking out garbage to the dumpster around 8 a.m. Monday, according to his girlfriend Valerie Widdall in an interview with The Cortland Voice Tuesday morning.

Alqahtani, age 40, is 5’8” with “dark curly hair and a beard,” which is noted in Klein’s Facebook post.

“He was supposed to run a Zoom meeting at 8:30 a.m., but never made it to the meeting,” Widdall said.

"When going through Alqahtani’s apartment, Widdall noticed some items missing, including his iPad, Dell computer, heightened [I THINK THIS IS SUPPOSED TO SAY HIKING] boots and water bottle.
Widdall noted Alqahtani’s iPad doesn’t work “unless it’s plugged in,” and his Dell computer is “too heavy to carry around.”

“(They are items) he normally doesn’t take with him,” Widdall said of Alqahtani’s iPad and computer.

Oh, I don't know....I thought it was honest and refreshing, with a touch of humour.

Plus the fact it highlights the fact that what he did was even more out of character for him.

He has been found deceased, according to the Van Cortland County Sheriff's Department. They searched rt. 281 after a reported sighting and found a body that was identified as Dr. Alquahtani. I'm glad that he was located and those who cared for him weren't left wondering. My thoughts are with his loved ones.

Muteb Alqahtani, 40, of Cortlandville, was found dead Tuesday in the woods near Route 281 in the Town of Cortlandville, according to a news release from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office.

He was reported to be seen on Tompkins Street at 9:40 a.m. and then reported seen on Route 281 at 11:11 a.m., deputies said. Deputies arrived and started searching the woods near Route 281 with SUNY police, where they found Alqahtani, deputies said.

No foul play is suspected at this time, deputies said.

His girlfriend returned home from work to find him missing, according to a friend of Alqahtani. He also missed a Zoom video meeting scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Monday, the friend said.

I am very familiar with the area, and one of my nieces attends college here (am waiting to hear back from her to see if she has any further information.)

The apartment complex where Dr. Alqahtani resides is entered/exited via Tompkins St/Route 13. There's no way to get in or out of the network of complexes without traveling on Tompkins, unless you decide to walk the railroad tracks. He would have to traverse Tompkins about 1/2 mile to reach the first street leading to campus.

If he headed north on Tompkins, it quickly changes from a commercial area to residential as you get closer to the city proper; heading south leads to several strip malls/plazas with stores like Wal-Mart and becomes increasingly rural the farther you go.

ETA: I see that he's been found. My sympathy goes out to his family and friends.
