Etan was lured with a soda.

PRESSER (cont.)

Patz family reaction:

"Mr. Patz was taken aback, a little surprised, overwhelmed....he handled it very well."
---
Does not appear that Hernandez had contact with Etan before that day.

Why is this a credible story?

"The fact he had told the story to others in the past, and the specificity of the information."
---
Did not provide a motive.

No reason to suspect sexual abuse "at this time."
---
As far as you know did he act alone?

"Yes. We believe at this time."

Miller and Ramos in the clear?

"The investigation is going forward. We believe that this is the individual responsible for the crime."
---
First confessed the crime to others, it is thought, in 1981. Doesn't appear person who heard confession knew he was referring to Etan.
---
"The body was taken a distance from the bodega, to another location in the neighborhood, a block, block and a half, away, in an open area - and left in the trash."
---
Hernandez was a stock clerk in the bodega, bringing items up from the basement into the store, when Etan was enticed into the basement.

Charged with second degree murder. Wonder why not first?

  • #204
Why second degree murder? He lured him and killed him!

  • #205
I haven't had time to read any new posts on this thread since the arrest...But for those of you don't live in the NY metro, are CBS and NBC showing the press conference instead of the originally scheduled programming?

  • #206
Why second degree murder? He lured him and killed him!

Probably because they dont have a body and they may have made a deal with him for the full confession.

  • #207
Knowing how much attention this arrest would garner...do you think they would have released any information without something to back some part of this guys "confession" ? I just hope that they know some kind of something that the media doesn't, and it isn't just oh ok this guy said he did it, let arrest him and close the case :(

Do you remember John Mark Karr?

The investigation is ongoing, they are not going to rule anything out at this point.

Hernandez is not the reason for the dig a month ago.

Very unlikely Etan Patz' body will be found.

LE believes Patz' body was removed very soon after the murder.

The crime happened at 8:30 a.m.

Etan was waiting for the schoolbus, apparently PH made a promise of a soda to Etan, and led him down the stairs into the basement cellar where he was choked.

There is some involvement with the Pentecostal Church and this case (and Hernadez)

The tips were NOT because of the reward.

The dig in April brought forth the person who had tips.

Unkown if there were other children at the bustop, when Etan was lead away.

LE does not believe there was previous contact or knowledge of Etan by PH.

Tip came in directly to the Missing Person's squad, it did not come in through the 1-800 line.

PH did not contact Etan's family, there is no indication.

I am just speechless right now. That poor little boy. My only son is six years old and this is upsetting me a lot.

I believed him. Afterall, he confessed to his family, suposively his psychic advisor? and LE! All of those years ago and is still sticking with the story. From my experience this usually indicates they are telling the truth. The Mark Karr's of the world usually start fixating on a crime and confess for a brief period, not 30+ years. Also, they can go on to live their lives as your ordinary Joe and may even kill again and again (BTK).

The Detectives questioned PH for 3 1/2 hours, and they believe his confession to be authentic.

Commissioner would not answer whether PH indicated something authentic like what Patz was wearing, his manner of speech, something that could independently verify the confession.

PH seemed like he was relieved, remorseful. There have been multiple interviews, with multiple people, and this has caused them to believe he it is a true confession.

Why wasn't PH questioned 33 years ago? LE can't answer why PH was not questioned 33 years ago.

Other people in the Bodega were questioned.

PH has NOT taken a polygraph.

Staying away from specifics of PH's statements right now.

Other people in the bodega were questioned.

He has not taken a polygraph.

Have spoken to some of the employees.

He was not on the books at the store.

Days later, he terminated his work there. No reason given.

He is a citizen.

His family did not own the bodega.

All part of investigation: if body was removed by sanitation.

Part of the investigation: if pedophilia involved.

As they say, "Wow. Just wow."

PH was interrogated yesterday, May 23, 2012.

PH was friendly to the Detectives.

Not going to talk about whether there is suspicion of pedophelia, if search warrant was issued, or if a computer was seized.

PH’s family did not own the Bodega.

PH worked at the Bodega apx. 1 month.

PH was terminated shortly after Etan’s disappearance.

LE is investigating PH’s behaviour 33 years ago, after Etan’s disappearance.

PH is a U.S. Citizen. PH is Puerto Rican.

PH was working under the table at the Bodega

Did they say he was terminated or that he quit? I think that's an important difference and I missed that part.

PRESSER: COMMISSIONER KELLY:

Similar confession to LE 33 years ago - is that accurate?

"No."
---
"No physical evidence at this time."
---
"He spoke to our detectives, we have a written confession, a signed confession; he spoke for three and a half hours....we believe there is probable cause to go forward with this arrest."
---
Individual with info came forward because of "recent notoriety" of the case.

Hernandez spoke to one family member and several others about having killed a child.
---
Body in trash outside of bodega.
---
"He was remorseful and the detectives thought it was a feeling of relief on his part."

He was not questioned in 1979. This is the first time he has emerged as a suspect.
---
No criminal record.

He wasn't questioned before??

I missed all but the last few minutes.

What building did he bring Etan to? The basement workshop or another basement?

Lured him into bodega basement which was open as Hernandez was bringing goods from storage up to the store.

Body was then taken a block or block and a half away and put in garbage.

I believe Kelly said, "Days later, he terminated his work there."
