What Happens if Ribs Break During CPR?

[...]

As disturbing as this experience is, however, it is generally not advisable to stop if you feel a rib break or hear a cracking sound. True, broken ribs and other skeletal injuries can be painful and add to the patient’s recovery time—but it’s better than being dead, which will certainly happen if you stop CPR.

[...]

The truth is that CPR is a vigorous, sometimes violent procedure, and there is a high risk of injury to the patient—but injury is preferable than death. If your patient is lucky enough to survive after CPR, chances are they will thank you—and count a broken rib as a small price to pay for their life.

IMO, the cause of Evanna's death has been clear. Her heart failed, and her kidneys failed after a prolonged illness which, IMO members of her family failed to get treatment for. CPR and broken ribs is secondary. As a Healthcare Professional myself, I have witnessed many broken ribs and sternums due to aggressive CPR. A light touch to the chest wall of a dying heart equals death. All EMT's are heroes in my eyes, and I am appalled at the claims otherwise

My father broke his ribs while working. The only thing you can really do is let it heal and take some pain meds if you can't stand the pain. He managed to break them again, didn't even want to take any pain meds and just let it heal on its own.

Broken ribs happen a lot because of CPR. It's important to get the person breathing again, the ribs will eventually heal. They did whatever they could to save that child, but she was way past that point when they were called. MOO

Exactly. The truth is that Evanna died from pneumonia and end-stage kidney disease. End-stage meaning the point of no return. The 7 adults in the home saw the symptoms of kidney failure for an entire week before they decided to get help. And even then they delayed by calling some doctor in Boston for an appointment and when Evanna's abdomen swelled up they *still* delayed calling 911, blaming it on Evanna, saying she *insisted* on going to the hospital in a car and not an ambulance. It wasn't until she collapsed and stopped breathing that they finally called 911.

In the pictures of Evanna that the family has posted on their blog you can see that she was tiny and extremely thin. IMO no way could anyone miss her legs and ankles swelling, not on that tiny body.

How much clearer can their negligence be? They can blame Evanna's death on whatever makes them "look" better in those ridiculous blog posts but the truth is the truth. Their negligent delay cost them Evanna's life and nothing can change that. MOO.

the comments on the boards are NOT going well for them lol.. it's amazing how that goes when they can't control the narrative and delete all posts that question anything ....apparently everyone is a social worker or state worker talking about them ...not paranoid at all .

Yes, it's a shame, isn't it? Those poor folks, so understood and all.

One more thing, a bit belated, from this history nerd, and the rest of us :

Nice little Web MD note there, thanks!
I feel that Evanna may have had pneumonia and became septic just as the article explained. Sepsis is nothing to mess with...it's a killer.
Court documents now reveal the child had been suffering from severe symptoms of pneumonia and renal disease.

None of which, court documents allege, the suspects got her appropriate medical care for.
Two charged in 2019 death of Austerlitz 12-year-old | WRGB

Steven Bennett and Heidi Tranberg-Bennett of Austerlitz were charged by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and arraigned Monday in Columbia County Court on a charge of second-degree manslaughter, a class C felony, in the death of a 12-year-old child.

Bennett and Tranberg-Bennett failed to seek and obtain timely medical care for the child, who had been showing symptoms of pneumonia and end-stage kidney disease, including swollen legs and swollen abdomen, according to court papers.

The symptoms grew worse over the period of at least one week and the child died last Dec. 6.

Agreed. I can understand your being pi...peeved. Those folks must be an embarrassment to many residents of that area, IMO.
We all angry and wondering why, why, why. That poor child, so mistreated by those people around her.

Bummer! I didn't know that. Ill be mindful of this.

Has anyone else noticed how often TVB uses the word "slapped"?

I need to Google "manslaughter."
I would like to know what all it entails.
Unless others can fill me in.

Oh my, now the family is posting screen shots of their phone (?) messages and explaining each capture on their family blog. Ugh, according to them Evanna caused major disruption in the family by being sick. The words they use to describe her while she was terminally ill and dying is heartbreaking. I'm not sure I've ever seen such negative words used for a loved one who died a horrible death like Evanna did. What is wrong with these people?

Any word on last night's hearing? None of the local news outlets bothered to report that I could find. Hopefully info will trickle out over the next few days. This may be the place to watch:

Also one person shared that press may not be involved due to “corruption” however V & recent Campbell have noted for almost a year how they have documentaries being made, many discussions with press & interested Watchgroups but still nothing publicly.. iMO just lies that they have any source legitimate or not interested in their “story”

no sense as why they post about a snowstorm... 911 will bring you an ambulance no matter what. terrible how they describe dealing with Evanna IMO- Do they even realize that Evidence that could be submitted in the criminal case may come from some of their posts? They clearly don’t realize that investigation does not try to gather witnessess from those that might refute any crime-that seems up to their own defense attny(maybe I am wrong). Hopefully the DA prosecutor has filed court orders to establish that they are the ones posting on the family page & as well if they have attempted to use anyone elses FB profile to post as that is identity theft- not unheard of if that is the case w the recent witness coming forward on SOCIAL MEDIA of all things!

And now suddenly the story they posted earlier this year about how the morning Evanna collapsed was actually the afternoon because the adults in the house tended to stay up all night and go to bed around 6 or 7 am has changed.

Now they claim it was Evanna keeping the adults up and making them tired. She invaded the parlor, kept everyone up all night while she watched movies, she kept violating the family quarantine rules and had to be constantly reminded not to.

According to the family Evanna wasn't even very sick. They go on to say some weird stuff that I think they mean sarcastically but IMO it's just creepy. The long post (it may be a record even for them) wanders around and talks about snowstorms, car crashes, teething babies, wanting to go to Boston to meet up with friends. I had to skim the rest or I'd miss Thanksgiving altogether.

My point is that once again they spew irrelevant, extraneous drivel. IMO it's an attempt to deflect from their responsibility for Evanna's death. After all that's what they're charged for yet somehow it's more important to them to convince - who? a bunch of strangers? - that they're victims of LE and DSS. All IMO.

In New York, a person can be charged with manslaughter if they "recklessly" caused the death of another (1st degree) or caused the death of a person with an "intent" to cause serious bodily harm. (2nd degree)

Manslaughter includes "Criminally Negligent Homicide," which is the killing of another person through "gross negligence" or without malice.

To prove negligent homicide, the prosecution would have to establish that the defendants knew the risks associated with their actions, and that there is a direct link between their actions and the victim's death.

In this case it appears that the "careless or reckless act" was the failure to seek medical attention sooner.

I think the prosecution will have to prove that the parents knew Evanna was at serious risk of dying, that they should have recognized her condition as a medical emergency and knowing this, still failed to seek medical treatment.

I don't think we know the answer to this, but I'm wondering if the other family members who were sick went to the Doctor or if they were tested for bacterial infections, or if they were just diagnosed with a cold or some other type of upper respiratory infection. I'm wondering if Evanna developed a secondary infection. Was it confirmed through medical records that she had pneumonia?

Imo

Yes, I don't think I've ever seen a case in which "The lady doth protest too much," that compares to this one. They are constantly on the defense.

What kind of family says about a beloved child, following her tragic death, that she was "invading" the parlor all week, using any "excuse" to watch movies, violating our home quarantine and ignoring our constant reminders not to do so?

She was 12 years old! Don't they realize they sound like they are blaming Evanna for getting sick and dying?
