Austerlitz couple accused of failing to get care for dying daughter

A husband and wife accused of failing to get medical attention for their 12-year-old daughter who died while suffering from kidney failure and pneumonia were arraigned on a criminal complaint filed by the Columbia County sheriff's office that charges them with manslaughter.

Steven Bennett, 58, and Heidi Tranberg-Bennett, 47, were charged with second-degree manslaughter Monday, nearly 11 months after their daughter, Evanna, died at Albany Medical Center Hospital after she was rushed to ambulance from the family's home on County Route 9, District Attorney Paul Czajka said.

The couple failed to seek medical care and disregarded the risk of death for their daughter "despite their awareness of her increasingly severe and apparent symptoms of pneumonia and end-stage renal disease including swelling of her legs and abdomen, weeping legs and increasing lethargy over a period of at least a week and as a result of their failure, the child died on Dec. 6, 2019," the complaint filed by Inv. William Dunspaugh states.

The Facebook page is very... interesting, to say the least. I'm unsure if we are allowed to discuss what has been posted there, but I'm going to alert a mod to this post so we can have that figured out. I think it would be very important for us to comment on those posts.

The FB pages appears to have been set up by the parents as it indicates it is in relation to their 'beloved daughter Evanna'.

As the parents have been charged in Evanna's death, their social media is allowed to be sleuthed.

ADMIN NOTE:

There are still no verified family members or insiders in this discussion, even though Websleuths owner, Tricia Griffith had previously extended an invitation for certain members to become verified.

FWIW, the previous thread was pulled by Tricia for no other reason than excessive TOS violations, on the understanding that the thread would reopen if / when there was new information.

This was Tricia's post when she pulled the earlier thread in January 2020:

Hey Everyone,

There are so many TOS violations on this thread due to posters posting unverified info, lots of personalizations going on too.

I'm closing this thread then I will remove it in just a bit. If new (meaning updated with new information) mainstream media information comes out then we can revisit starting another thread.

Thank you,
Tricia

Obviously the new MSM information that is available is that Evanna's
parents have been charged in this tragic case. That is why this thread has been opened for discussion.

As per Websleuths TOS, posts containing information stated as fact without either MSM or LE to support, or without the member being Verified, have been removed. Members who become verified do not have to provide links to what they state as fact. In all other aspects, they are held to the same TOS (aka The Rules) as all of our regular members.

The offer for family members or insiders to apply for verification still stands and the instructions on how to do so can be found here.

ADMIN REMINDER:

Please remember to make it clear when it is your opinion (MOOs, JMOs, IMOs, I think, I believe, etc)

Thank you :)

I appreciate Websleuths insisting on VI status for family posters. Additionally in this case, the poster was trying to interfere with and intimidate members discussion.
I am still unclear on how to participate but not antagonize the family poster.

Just avoid making any direct accusations and post in accordance with Websleuths TOS and there won't be any cause for concern. Members are allowed to respectfully express opinions based on information that is publicly available from approved sources ... how others interpret or respond to such opinions is up to them and not in our control.

ADMIN NOTE:

Websleuths does not allow naming or discussing minor children except when that child is the victim, in this case, Evanna.

It's fine if member wish to refer to, for example, So-and-so's 2 children, or the 10 year old, but to name or discuss that actual child any further is off limits.

If the family name their own children on their own site, that's their prerogative, but it is long standing WS policy not to allow it.

Please bear this in mind when formulating your posts.

Thank you.

The previous thread was pulled and remains pulled due to extensive TOS violations. Don't let that happen to this one.

If you haven't done so already, please review Websleuths Terms of Service (aka The Rules, linked in my signature) that members agree to when they join Websleuths. The two main threads to review are titled

Etiquette & Information, and

Social Media - Facebook, Twitter, etc.

All members are required to familiarize themselves with those rules and post in accordance with them.

Threads are dedicated specifically to discussion of the case at hand. Posts that do not relate directly to the case are considered off topic and will be removed, and that includes discussing or challenging moderation. If there are questions about any of WS rules, please send them by private message to a Moderator or Administrator so as not to derail the thread.

Here's a short run down on a few important rules.

  • Do not sleuth people who have not been officially named by LE as a POI or suspect in a case. This includes friends and family members of the accused. Unless LE indicates that an individual is a POI/suspect, that individual is OFF LIMITS to sleuthing and speculation. Please keep your suspicions to yourself.
  • General comments (rumors and gossip) from social media are NOT allowed on WS. If you read it on social media, leave it there.
  • WS holds to a "victim friendly" policy, so the above applies even more strongly to family members, particularly parents and spouses, who in most cases are innocent, and suffering terribly when their loved one is missing or murdered. The last thing we want to do is add to their pain. Therefore, they always are granted the benefit of the doubt.
  • While brainstorming theories is encouraged, theories must be based on fact. For our purposes, "fact" refers to information published in the mainstream media (MSM) or other acceptable sources, such as law enforcement, academic and professional publications.
  • When you state something as "fact", you must back it up with a link to an approved source. If you don't know whether a link or source is acceptable, private message a Mod or Admin to ask. There are hundreds of thousands of random blogs and internet sources that are not acceptable at Websleuths and they are too numerous to list.
  • If you can't link it, you can't post it or discuss it.
  • Social media is a nightmare in terms of rumors. You can summarize information from an original post on a LE or MSM FB page. No copy and paste, no screenshots, and you must include link.
  • If you have a post removed, do not repost it, and do not discuss it. Mods have the right to edit and delete posts at their discretion if deemed inappropriate, or in violation of TOS. Questions and concerns should be addressed to a Moderator or Administrator in a private message. DO NOT post them in the thread.
The above is only a partial list of the rules. You'll find others in the links provided. Please check them out, as it is your responsibility to know them.

If at any time, you have questions or need assistance, please use the private messaging system to contact us.

FYI

Pastebin is not an approved source to link to. If you've had information removed here, you can't just upload it to a text storage site and link back to it. That's just getting it in the back door and is not acceptable.

WS Mods and Admins do not and can not sit in each thread to read posts in real time so we rely on our more veteran members to Report any post that is not acceptable. So while you will see some links to such text storage sites that still exist at WS, that is because members did not alert us to the existence of such links.

Okay everyone,

This thread is for Evanna.

Please keep the focus on Evanna and forego the social media drama of what a FB page has to say about Websleuths or anything other than Evanna. It is derailing the thread, has no bearing on Evanna's case and is in fact a total distraction from it.

Evanna is the victim here. Remember Evanna !!

Hey everyone,

Please pay special attention to this post.

Read Websleuths Terms of Service (aka TOS aka The Rules), and specifically as it relates to Social Media and Etiquette & Information. Those rules are always linked in my signature, and all members are responsible for familiarizing themselves with them.

Members can not sleuth non-POIs (i.e. friends or family who are not officially named POIs/suspects, and that includes SC), regardless of what that person is saying on some community page that is not approved for discussion here. The community source is not MSM and is not approved, and even if it was, comments by "general public" are never allowed for discussion. SC who is posting there is just another member of the general public so what they have to say has no bearing here at Websleuths.

WS seems to be dealing with an exceptionally litigious segment of the population in this particular case, so please PLEASE just adhere to TOS.

Once again, let's all keep the focus on Evanna. What happened to Evanna ... what is in MSM, info from LE, what is contained on the public social media pages of only the accused individuals, information available in public records, government or scholarly medical articles. If in doubt, please check with a Mod or Admin and we will help clarify.

Repeat after me ... TOS TOS TOS !!

Thank you.

Tricia and I have discussed the Chatham Community Board .

As members of the family have been charged, the Tranberg-Bennett comments on that board, with appropriate links, are now open for discussion.

Please do not link to or discuss comments by anyone else on that board as they are not the accused in this case. If the TB comments are answering a question on that thread, you may briefly paraphrase the question without naming the individual who asked, but do not link to that member's profile or discuss them in any way.

Any questions, please do not post them on the thread. Send them to me or any Mod/Admin via private messaging.
