In an email shared with PEOPLE on Thursday, Dec. 11, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) said that Jafet Jemmott, 15, was last seen leaving home in the Rockaways on Nov. 28 at about 6 a.m. local time.

Jafet’s father, Federico Jemmott, said they got into a fight the previous night because Jafet wanted to go shopping at a thrift store in Brooklyn, before going to the Kings Plaza mall with friends, News 12 reported....

By using an app, they saw that his phone had 5% battery remaining when he left the house, but that the last place they were able to track him before his phone lost power was the Cross Bay Bridge.

His family said they believe he boarded the Q52 bus shortly after leaving their home.

“We are basically assuming that he went to meet someone at that time, because there's nowhere else someone could be leaving to go at six o'clock in the morning — no mall, no stores are open,” Federico told Gothamist.

The family says workers at the YMCA near their home saw someone matching his description, looking like they were about to get on the Q52 bus a little after Jafet left the house. His phone's last location was going over the Cross Bay Bridge.

"We have no idea where he was going, because he doesn't usually take the 52," Federico said.
He also told News 12, that through the phone company, were able to see he got a few messages on WhatsApp two hours before he left the house. However, they were unable to tell the full number they came from, and not what they said.

"My theory is that maybe he was speaking to someone online," Federico explained. "They probably convinced him to leave the house that day and he left."

Police said Jafet Jemmott, 15, was last seen leaving his home on Burchell Avenue in Arverne around 6 a.m. on Nov. 28. He’d had an argument with his father about wanting money to go shopping, according to NYPD officials. His family said they later heard from his friends that he was supposed to meet them at the Kings Plaza Mall on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn that morning....

Federico said his son has “excellent grades in almost every subject” at Midwood High School and enjoys playing video games. He has never disappeared from home before, according to his family and law enforcement officials.

Jemmott was last seen wearing a black sweater, black pants and white sneakers, officials said. Police said he is about 5’6” and 140 pounds with brown eyes and black hair.

A small group of locals organized a search on their own last weekend.

Local activist Theresa Racine of Xtrememeasure, and Ozzie Edwards, a local community activist, promptly formed a search team on Sunday, December 7, after seeing a post shared by The Rockaway Times....at least 12 community members showed up to the search and distribute flyers, with those with vehicles searching the Cross Bay area and nearby malls. The parents had been conducting an independent search for over a week before the public was notified.

CrimeStoppers photo of Jafet/Elijah at the link below, plus his exact address, which is a block away from Jamaica Bay. I remain concerned about this young man.

It was reported to police that the missing teen was last seen leaving his residence at 72-29 Burchell Avenue in Arverne, on Friday, Nov. 28, at approximately 6:00 a.m.

If he wanted to go to a thrift store and a mall on the same day, he was probably wanting new clothes so he could look for a girlfriend at the mall.

I’m curious as to whether they tracked his phone across the entirety of the Cross Bay Bridge/Boulevard into Howard Beach, or whether it cut off before then. The Q52 would not be the bad to take to the Kings Center Mall.

And no footage of where he disembarked? Bus, CCTV? Seems hard to believe this day and age, especially in the city.

It was apparently 6am when he left home. November 28 was Black Friday and perhaps the mall opened early? Would a 15yo care about Black Friday shopping? Maybe he had something in mind he wanted to get at sale price?

According to the father, they had an argument the day before he went missing. That means the argument was on Thanksgiving. Was there a family gathering? Did someone else witness the argument?

I don't think so. From what I understand, the phone lost battery and the father is only guessing Jafet/Elijah boarded the Q52.

My hunch is if we're not seeing footage of him getting off the bus along the route, it's because he wasn't on the bus. Speculation only.

Interesting. It would take a very long time to walk that bridge and to the mainland, although it is possible. There's a jogging/bike lane all along there that allows for it. It also takes you past Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, which is a lovely place for bird watching but contains a lot of rough and remote woodland, at least by NYC standards.

There must be CCTV cameras along though route, though. I would be shocked if there weren't. There just aren't that many ways to leave the Rockaways unseen without a car.

The subway crosses the bay. But, yes, the Rockaways are remote in that regard. I'd like confirmation he did actually leave the neighborhood. Surely some houses along the route to the bus would have cameras?

In addition, there is a ferry within walking distance. I've taken that. The "terminal" is basically a covered dock with a couple of benches and a ticket machine. Not sure it would have cameras.

Adding to this - you need a ticket to board the ferry and passengers embark one-by-one. It's not expensive, but there is no way he could board without the ticket-scanner person interacting with him.
