Found this picture per Chinese news media of the couple's Bentley outside the house shortly after their disappearance.
My best guess is they were kidnapped by the CCP (which sounds a bit conspiracy minded until you realize it is a thing that's been quite the issue in US and Australia especially the past few years).

In 2023, coincidentally in New York also:

The FBI on Monday arrested two New York residents on charges of opening and operating an “off-the-books” Chinese police outpost in lower Manhattan since February last year to track, intimidate, and stifle dissenters of the ruling Communist Party in China.

Charges were also filed against 34 officials under China’s Ministry of Public Security (MPS) for allegedly harassing Chinese nationals in New York using fake social media profiles. Another nine individuals believed to be based in China were added to a previous complaint for allegedly conspiring to commit interstate harassment by utilizing a U.S. telecommunications company to target a New York-based CCP dissident.

The trio of cases shows the extent to which China monitors and attempts to stamp out critics, even those outside its borders.

The complaint said the hidden police station—located at the office of Lu and Chen’s nonprofit at 107 East Broadway, which is within New York’s Chinatown—was opened on Feb. 15, 2022, without diplomatic approval from the U.S.
The office was closed in the fall of 2022 amid scrutiny over the legality of its operations.

Investigation outlined in the complaint revealed that [one of the arrested conspirators] even posed for a picture with a sign that read “Fuzhou Public Security Bureau, Overseas 110 Report to Police Service Station.”

Given that ICE now quickly moves detainees from state to state, I'm not surprised it's difficult to find out if she is in ICE detention. That said, if she has friends in high places, there could be discussions in the background that make it difficult to know her status.

I do wonder if this is a "regular" scam to get the family's money, or a government operation to take back money Chinese officials believe belongs to China (given the strange circumstances of the disappearance).

Maybe she's listed under another name. If she's a scam artist, she might have different aliases.

Hey everyone.. just a quick little update from a headline I read.

Yinye Roy Wang did not appear in court the day he was scheduled and is currently on the run. It was bound to happen after his bail, as much as I should express my frustration at our judicial system, can’t say I’m surprised. Not sure how these people can dip out of the US, but I’m sure Roy will find a way to flee somehow and get into his mainland. How it’s done? Not sure.. maybe sailing ships via shipping containers. That’s my probable guess. He cannot board planes since he doesn’t have a Real ID, but told the court he would drive cross country from California (where he was arrested) to New York. This whole thing is a freaking hard face palm.

I’m sorry that sounds like an SNL skit. They couldn’t seriously think he wouldn’t immediately run! Wow.

Yup, half of their lead is gone, great work, our country deserves a medal for this.. they still have his wife in custody, so it’s either she stays loyal to Roy or spills the entire can of beans.

Are Roy and Quiju actually married, or were they just partners in crime?

You want to know what's crazy? Webster University has Roy on their website. I don't know why they have an eleven year old testimonial up, couldn't they get one from a more recent grad? Perhaps someone who isn't a criminal?

If I have more imagination - perhaps he has been taken by his country's agents so that he can't leak what he knows about the missing couple.

There's more info in this Newsday article:

Wang:
Wang's lawyer, Felipe Garcia, told Wicks that his client, who was arrested on Sept. 4 in California and released on bond, tried unsuccessfully to board a flight to New York last week. He was unable to because he didn't have his passport or a REAL ID, a driver's license with enhanced screening, Garcia said.
Garcia said he last spoke to Wang a week ago, when the defendant told him he was going to drive cross-country to make his court date. Garcia said despite "numerous attempts to contact him via email" and calls to his cellphone, he "hasn't received a response."

Wu:
Wicks ordered Wu detained without bond after the prosecutor, Wenzel, said she was boarding a flight to Hong Kong at the time of her arrest. Wenzel also said her residence and employment information were "unverifiable."
A representative from pretrial services, who did not state her name in court, told the judge that Wu has a husband in the United States but has no other family ties.

Still no record of Qiuju Wu on the ICE detention page.
I think because she's accused of a crime, she's not in ICE custody. I looked her up on the Bureau of Prisons website (bop.gov) and she's listed there.
