Karen left her home for an appointment and was never seen again. A female matching Karen's description was observed by NYS Parks Police jumping into the American rapids in the Niagara Falls State Park, but her body was never recovered. Karen's family later had her declared legally deceased.

Other distinctive physical characteristics:
Karen reportedly had pierced ears, two front teeth that were crooked, a mole over her left breast, a dark patch on her right elbow, and a short scar over the center of her left eyebrow.
