According to court documents, both parties will return to court on July 14 to continue pretrial conferences to discuss the motion. Time was also set aside for the matter on Aug. 18.

http://www.uniondemocrat.com/localnews/5447838-151/three-hearing-dates-set-in-karlsen-case?referrer=home

A conditional examination allows for testimony from a witness who may be infirm or unavailable at the time of a jury trial. The testimony is recorded and has the same force as testimony given during a jury trial.

Barrett set the conditional examinations hearing for 9 a.m. Aug. 17.

Barrett vacated an Aug. 18 hearing date on the change of venue motion, rescheduling it for 11 a.m. Sept. 15.

This perp has no love or compassion for anyone. His unfortunate wife had very good reason to worry when he took a million dollar life insurance policy out on her - - she was next.!!!!! and she realised it..!!!!! She had to do something to save her own life. It would have been a difficult thing to do, but she knew she was next so she had to take action - - she knew he would kill her. What a terrible situation to be in. We come across some terrible situations here at Websleuths..!!!!

Plea for dismissal filed in Karlsen case

http://www.calaverasenterprise.com/news/article_0568b8da-82ca-11e7-9de1-77930eefd373.html

On Aug. 2, Scott Gross and David Wellenbrock, Karlsen’s attorneys, filed the motion on the grounds that the evidence and witnesses that would allow for a fair trial are either destroyed, dead or missing.

“A significant amount of the evidence gathered in the initial investigation has been lost or destroyed,” Gross wrote. “Medical records for Karl Karlsen, who was transported to the hospital in an ambulance, no longer exist to show his injuries. Most of the fire reports of the fire crew and investigators have been lost or destroyed. The photographs of the fire scene taken by an expert hired by the insurance company have been lost or destroyed.”

Karlsen currently remains in Calaveras County Sheriff’s custody. The matter will be heard at 10 a.m. on Aug. 31 by Judge Richard D. Meyers.

Witnesses recount Christina Karlsen’s life and death

A former State Farm insurance agent, a Vallecito volunteer firefighter and a former friend of Christina Karlsen, who was killed in a 1991 fire in Murphys, gave conditional testimony at an examination hearing Thursday morning on the circumstances surrounding her death.

Each of the witnesses was asked to testify at the district attorney’s request. Presiding Judge Grant Barrett acknowledged that all three were older than 65, and one woman lives in Arizona.

At the conclusion of the testimonies, Barrett said that the transcripts and video of the proceedings would remain sealed pending a motion to request the information.

Details from the testimonies are included in the article.

Just surprises me it took so long to figure it out. And even then it took the second wife to figure it out. Just the timing should have made anybody suspicious. He took the son out in the morning of the son's murder to sign a will naming the father sole beneficiary. He took a life insurance on the son 17 days before the murder. And police, or insurance company, didn't think that was fishy?

WOW-I wonder what the biggest kick was for him, the money or the killing? This is also another excellent example of why you should always listen to that intuition.

My guess is money. Killing is just a way to get to the money.

Judge rules the Calaveras County jury pool not tainted against Karlsen

http://www.uniondemocrat.com/localnews/5599772-151/judge-rules-the-calaveras-county-jury-pool-not?referrer=home&referrer=top

A change of venue motion submitted by Karl Karlsen’s defense counsel was denied during a Friday hearing at the Calaveras County Superior Court.

Following the arguments, Judge Thomas A. Smith corroborated the prosecution’s arguments by noting that, despite the general credibility of the study, he did not believe “that the county is so predisposed” to have already made up their mind about the case.

Smith noted that his ruling was without prejudice, and indicated that if the jury pool was in fact predisposed to a verdict or knowledgeable about the case, he could accept a motion for a change of venue at that time.

The court will hear a defense motion to dismiss the case based on a due process violation at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 5.

Very true! If I found out anyone took out a life insurance policy on me without us discussing it, I would be out of there faster than a jackrabbit on a hot skillet!

http://www.uniondemocrat.com/localnews/6144324-151/karlsen-issued-new-trial-date

Karl Karlsen on Thursday was issued a new trial date of Oct. 3 at the Calaveras County Superior Court, but no new information was revealed regarding a pending mental competency evaluation to determine his ability to stand trial.

Karlsen, 56, appeared frustrated with the postponements and distant scheduling of his upcoming trial, gruffly shaking his head when asked by Judge Thomas A. Smith if he would confirm a time waiver to allow the Oct. 3 trial date.

“I’ll go to trial today if I could, but Scott’s got to do what Scott’s got to do,” he said, referring to his attorney, Scott Gross, of Sonora.

Karlsen trial postponed: Lawyer quits, cites conflict of interest

Sonora attorney Scott Gross quit his representation of Karl Karlsen on Tuesday at the Calaveras County Superior Court, forcing the postponement of the trial less than one day before jury selection was scheduled to begin. Gross said he discovered a conflict of interest in his representation of Karlsen, but did not offer additional details in open court. Following the hearing, Gross declined to comment on the reason for the conflict due to a protective order on the trial.

The judge set a trial setting conference for Oct. 11 at the Calaveras County Superior Court and tentatively assigned Karlsen representation from the Calaveras County Public Defender’s Office.

Convicted murderer Karl Karlsen has gone against the counsel of his defense team and withdrawn his general time waiver, exercising his right to a trial within 60 days. His trial date is now set for Feb. 13.

After a lengthy conference at the bench during which Karlsen watched intently, public defender Tony Salazar stated that Karlsen had been advised not to withdraw his time waiver, and that the defense would likely file a request for a postponement at the next court date on Jan. 7.

This perp has no love or compassion for anyone.
I agree.

One can see the depths of his sociopathy as his victims even included his son. Even amongst sociopaths, the calculated murder (as opposed to rage murder) of their own child is extremely rare.

As a side note, The Hare test rates potential sociopaths with a score between 1-36. Those scoring 19-29 are said to show varying degrees of sociopathic tendencies. Those scoring over 30 are fully sociopathic with 36 being the extreme. If guilty, this individual is in the extreme, even amongst that group.

A jury of seven women and five men found Karl Karlsen guilty Monday morning of first-degree murder by arson in the death of his wife, Christina.

Two special allegations against Karlsen, that he committed the murder for financial gain and that he had a previous murder conviction in the death of his son Levi, were found to be true.
