BRENTWOOD - The director of a Brentwood nursery school is expressing concerns about gang violence following the deaths of four teenagers in the area.

Chris Walerius, the director of Learning Adventures Children's Center, says she has to go outside and inspect the playground every day to make sure nobody is there before taking the kids outside.

Walerius says she's witnessed drug deals and gang activity in the wooded area directly behind the day care, where about 40 kids are enrolled. The program is housed at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and its children range in age from 18 months old to 10 years old.

The back wall of the church is covered with MS-13 markings, serving as a constant reminder of the gang presence in the area.

4 Brentwood Teens found dead in a month:

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (AP) - The school year in one suburban New York community has started with funerals, fear and frustration.

Four teenagers from Brentwood High School on Long Island have been found dead within the past month, all suspected victims of gang violence. While police are releasing few details about their investigation, students are saying they're afraid to walk alone in their community and school administrators are warning students not to wear the wear clothing that could risk offending vicious street ****s.

I grew up in Brentwood in the 70s. So sad to hear this. I guess my parents knew what they were doing when they moved us to California in 1979. I was so upset to leave but it all worked out for the best. My prayers are with the families of these teens.

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that said the Salvadoran gang MS-13 is suspected, although police have not made arrests. The official was not authorized to talk publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

"We've come together in unity," Elizabeth Alvarado, Mickens' mother, said. "I somehow manage to stay strong," she said. "I think it's the girls, because they'd want it that way."


Alvarado stood shoulder to shoulder with the mother of Kayla Cuevas, as they prayed, cried and held each other. Cuevas' mother did not speak publicly.

UPDATE ON BRENTWOOD
Over the past month, the Suffolk County Police Department has made arrests of over 25 known MS-13 gang members in the state system and have charged an additional 5 MS-13 gang members in the federal system. Because of the enhanced patrols the SCPD has deployed in the Brentwood area, total violent crime is down 75% and property crime is down 35%. Watch below for an update from Police Commissioner Tim Sini on the bold, strategic efforts of the SCPD to reduce crime, decimate gangs and keep community members safe in Brentwood.

While we have made progress, there is still more that needs to be done. The SCPD is committed to this effort in the long haul. We stand with the community in Brentwood and are committed to working with all of our communities to make sure our residents are safe.
