The sentence isn't as harsh as it should be. It should be life in prison without the possibility of parole. I.e., this guy could still get out early.
What this guy did was sickening & completely unjustified. Again, I don't understand how a car full of kids that are driving away from your home are posing a threat to you. WTF?! It's not like they were trying to break into the home. They obviously got turned around, and this had also obviously happened before to this guy - so he knew what was going on.
I'm honestly surprised he got any kind of a sentence here. I.e., typically people that look like him are not perceived of as a "threat" & also typically have enough $ to hire a big-shot that will get charges like this reduced/dismissed.
