or the number of skulls has no significance so when he painted the mural just drew however many he felt like

I think the mural was actually painted in August/September of 2010. The facebook page posting for it was started 8/18/2010, and it was supposed to be finished by Labor Day, which was Monday, 9/6/2010. Amber Lynn Costello was the last victim to go missing, and she was last seen 9/2/2010.

@shadowraiths:
I summer in Long Island @ W. Gilgo Beach.
I don't know how to do the maps, but I can tell you where there are tunnels connecting the oceanside to the bay are.
From east to west on Ocean Parkway, the first one is at Cedar Beach, then Gilgo Beach, next would be W. Gilgo. Then on the Nassau Couty side would be Tobay Beach.
At Cedar beach, it connects the ocean to the campgrounds, Gilgo Beach connects to the parking area and the bar, W. Gilgo residents walk through from the homes to the ocean. At Tobay, it connects the ocean beach to the bay beach, restaurant and parking area. If you satellite the map, the underpass area's are quite clear. All are used by pedestrians, no vehicles.

maybe the SK saw the mural and started dumping near there? That makes more sense, given the mural was painted in 07. It is creepy though. Along with the head stones in the bay.....that sounds like quite a sight.

The headstones aren't sticking out of the water like a cemetery.

That's a different mural, that's the West Gilgo underpass

This blog from 7/07 says the Gilgo underpass was completed http://www.bragino.com/archives/224

:floorlaugh: That comment struck me as funny!!! That would be WAY too over the top!!! This whole case has been filled with a lot of strange coincidences and bizarre stories. It is more like a Stephen King novel than a True Crime case, except for the fact that there are real people involved. Regarding the mural - it is creepy given the context of where it is located. The two artist that created it are intriguing.... I am a bit surprised they can afford a gallery as nice as the one they seem to have on Manhattan Ave. in Brooklyn. They sort of redefine the concept of 'starving artist'. I fully support the arts - in fact, I am actually involved in the arts, and I am really open minded about things. The video about their art gallery was really interesting, and looked like a place I would probably go hang out (scroll down the page at the link below). I am curious about one thing, however... what the heck is that thing that the artist is using to practice his "tattoo" skills on at about 10:30 and again at about 18:10 into the video??? It looks like a pigs foot or something! Any ideas what it is?? Just curious......

I get the feeling that everyone thinks this place is creepy, but you are all sadly mistaken. Long Island has the most beautiful beaches in the world. The sand is white, the water is beautiful. This is nature at it's finest. There are dunes with sea grass and rosa rugosa. It truly is a wonderful place.
What has happened here is most unfortunate.

Well said ItalinBella! I am sure it IS a beautiful place, but you have to admit a lonely deserted stretch of road where numerous bodies are dumped from potentially several serial killers and tunnels with skulls painted on them is not exactly a dream come true marketing ploy for any tourist bureau. In fact, I was thinking about how this is going to hurt the tourism business for Long Island this summer. Will it result in fewer tourist, or perhaps more tourist? I bet it won't make much difference at all. Sadly, I think this case is a big deal to people like us here at WS's and the families of the victims, but most the world probably doesn't even know about it.

Long Island beaches are beautiful. I love Smithpoint Beach. They have a campground where you can swim in the ocean right next to your tent. I loved nights listening the ocean hitting the sand when camping with friends. It is a crying shame that murderous sickos are tarnishing our beautiful Long Island beaches.

It probably is a pig's foot. It's actually pretty common to use pigskin for practice.

Oh gosh, you are right! My bad! Just what Gilgo Beach needed - a whole bunch of tunnels! Icing on the freaking cake!!! Geesh!!! Thanks dc!!!

Actually they do. Pedestrian tunnels are much safer than having people try to cross the road.

ItalianBella,

It is such a beautiful place! I have lived here all my life. But the people are what makes Oak Beach creepy!!

For them not to have any compassion for that family is just so sad. All they care about down there is their property value. Oak Beach is the quintessential "It's all about me" community. They should have rallied around that family and said that they would help to solve this mystery. Somebody saw something that night and they aren't telling anyone because they are scared that it will hit them in the pocket if the truth comes out.

There is a killer living in that community and the rest of the community should smoke him out! Or they may be his next victim!

It's been ages since I've been to the area, specifically Jones Beach & Fire Island, but my memory of the area is a fond one. These murders, as tragic as they are do not change that.

That said, I'm going to ask the mods to delete the "Oak Beach Weirdness" thread, as I feel some may find that thread offensive. And to those whom I may have offended, please accept my apology.

Yeah, that is the impression I got......many, many piled up. It is something I think I'd like to see. Interesting.

Shadow.... I actually think the postings on the "weirdness" thread are pertinent to this case. And I don't really find it offensive, and I don't think I would if I lived there. Then again, I live in the South, and we take a lot of hits about all sort of preconceptions regarding the people and the places that I call family and home. In this current case, even the experts have said that the physical nature of Oak Beach might help to explain the NUMEROUS bodies that have been dumped there. That is a strange, and weird thing indeed!!! There IS something strange about that part of the world because a lot of bodies - and body parts - have been dumped there for YEARS and no one noticed them until Shannon Gilbert had a horrible experience there. We still don't know the rest of that story, but I am willing to bet the ending is going to be as strange as anything else we have heard about Oak Beach.
