A 20-year-old college student from the area has gone missing and authorities are asking for the public's help in locating him.

Michael McLaughlin, of Cornwall in Orange County, attends Stony Brook University in Suffolk County on Long Island.

The 6-foot, 150-pound McLaughlin, who has brown hair and green eyes, was last seen on Saturday, Dec. 15 wearing a black jacket, black pants and white shoes. He is believed to be driving a 2008 gray Subaru Impreza with New York registration HRE-5719.

The last time Mike was seen or heard from was early Thursday morning. It appears that Mike left campus driving west and crossed the state line into NJ at approximately 6 AM on Thursday. He drives a 2008 Subaru Impreza (dark gray) with NY license plate HRE-5719. If you have any information on Mike’s whereabouts, please contact 631-632-3333.

I hope he is found safe. Sometimes students have a hard time at college, especially after finals, and make unwise choices when under duress about grades. Or get tired driving and go off the road. I hope instead he's at a friend's home and safe.

The group's president said that the man's car was last tracked crossing into New Jersey through the Holland Tunnel around 6 a.m. on Thursday morning. The member said the timing of his disappearance is also strange.

SBU police: Missing student may have left state

Missing Stony Brook University junior Michael McLaughlin may be traveling across the country.

McLaughlin had been nervous about his finals, his mother said Tuesday. He failed to show up for the exams last week, and did not work his shift with the Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

My hope is that he left because of stress, but is just hiding. In this scenario, he is able to come back once exams have passed. In a way, I'm glad this did not go viral, because it makes it easier for him to return to loved ones.

If you are reading this, Michael, I can tell you that no one who cares about you will be lastingly angry or sarcastic if you come back, but will just be RELIEVED and HAPPY at your return. Don't stay gone - return to loved ones. Many, many students have a bad semester and you can make it up later.

With each passing day, the worry grows that something untoward has happened to 20-year-old chemistry major Michael McLaughlin.
Authorities say his vehicle was seen crossing the Holland Tunnel into New Jersey at 6 a.m. Dec. 13. He has a GPS on his cellphone but the phone doesn't appear to be working or turned on, his father said. Stony Brook University police said Saturday there's no new information on the case. "We're trying to hold up," said John McLaughlin, adding that the support from friends and family has helped. "There's a million people looking for him." He added, "He's never done anything like this before."
