A newborn girl was discovered wrapped in a blanket at a subway station in Midtown Manhattan during New York City's Monday morning rush hour, authorities said.

The baby was found just before 9:30 a.m. on a staircase leading to a train platform at West 34th Street and Seventh Avenue, the New York Police Department said.

The state of New York has a safe haven law, or the Abandoned Infant Protection Act, where are a parent can abandon "a newborn baby up to 30 days of age anonymously and without fear of prosecution -- if the baby is abandoned in a safe manner." In the case of the law, the parent must abandon the baby in a safe location, such as a hospital, staffed police station or staffed fire station, provided they also notify an "appropriate person," according to the Office of Children and Family Services.

I hope the baby's mother is safe.
I imagine if she abandoned the baby, she was desperate, but she wanted the baby to be found quickly.

Yes, that is a very busy place and the baby was sure to be found with help provided quickly. Not an ideal situation, but one that resulted in a baby being left alive and found alive.

I’m glad the baby was found and is well. I can’t help but think though looking at the images of the woman LE is seeking, that she looks older than I’d expect and well put together for someone who just gave birth unattended. That doesn’t mean older women can’t and don’t abandon their babies (or have terminations or give babies up for adoption - they do). But I am actually a little concerned there might be a young girl or woman out there who gave birth and has had her baby taken away because it might raise some suspicions if she turned up with a baby. I hope LE is at least considering that angle. All MOO.

Yes, I was wondering if that is a grandmother.

I’m so curious exactly where the baby was found…really on a staircase? Maybe one that wasn’t regularly used? Because how was the little one not trampled? Thank goodness! Agree, I wonder if it was someone else who actually gave birth.

It is a busy subway station, but people are not cattle and don't trample on items as they walk in the stations. There was no danger trampling, imo. While it was not an ideal place, it was a place for the baby to be found quickly.

Same thought—I hope that the woman who gave birth to the infant is safe and consented to having the child surrendered (although certainly not in the ideal way, it sure beats many of the terrible alternatives).

Yea, that’s true. I just feel like whenever I’m there at certain times, there are mad dashes to catch certain trains, so I pictured only those times. I went for the drama 🥹

Arrest made:

Assa Diawara, 30, was arrested early Wednesday in Queens on charges of abandonment of a child and endangering the welfare of a child, according to the New York Police Department.

I wonder now if maybe mom was an immigrant and didn't know that babies can be surrendered by following a process. She seems to have taken at least some care for the baby to be found safe. MOO

While I understand the charges of abandonment, I hope mercy and compassion are shown in the legal process. While it might not have been the "best" solution, the mother did the "right" thing by making sure her baby was found and provided care.

I feel like there is a back story to this, but I hope not.

I really think that at least the baby wasn't strangled and put in a trash bin. So, there is that.
