Oh, wow! I wonder if the wellness check is when it was discovered that the girls are missing.

This article goes into more detail. Cindy Maxwell is the mother of the two girls. This is terrible.

A 45-year-old woman was found shot to death and decomposing in her Bronx apartment, cops said Sunday.

Police came knocking on Cindy Maxwell’s door in the Parkside Houses on Arnow Ave. near Barker Ave. in Allerton about 3:50 p.m. Saturday after receiving a call asking them to check on her well-being.

That call came from a downstairs neighbor who said he was alarmed by the foul smell.

********
Neighbor said they heard four gunshots on Wednesday but police responded to a different building in the complex, perhaps because of the way the sound echoes through the housing development.

Maxwell worked as a home attendant, said one friend, Marta Medina.

“She was a nice person,” said Medina, 50. “She lived in the building a long time and she had two daughters. One I think was 11 and the other around 6.”

It’s not clear who has custody of the children now or where they were staying in the days leading up to the discovery of their mother’s body.

I hope the sisters were not taken by whoever killed their mom. I’m hoping maybe their mom sent them out, maybe gave them money to walk to the store for example before she was killed? That being said, the two could be witnesses to what happened….

I haven’t seen it mentioned who the witness was? I hope a family member or friend is keeping them safe somewhere, and maybe isn’t even aware of the mother’s murder?

OK that makes sense they were seen on camera. So at least they weren’t harmed in the apartment. Praying more witnesses will come forward. Those poor children, hope they are found very soon.

They were probably seen on camera leaving the building & walking up the street, since there is a picture of them in the clothes they were last seen wearing. The picture apparently hasn't been released yet.
The sisters were last seen leaving the building on Wednesday, the same day the gunshots were heard. Hopefully, if it was a cctv camera that captured them, that same camera captured the killer.
I just hope the killer and the missing kiddos were not in the same frame.

This article is behind a paywall for me, but the part that is visible is heartbreaking. I'm sure it won't be long before there is more MSM coverage.

Sources say the person of interest is the father of the victim's two daughters — and that the girls were present in the apartment when their mom was killed.

“Am so glad the children were found alive”

I was not able to read the article due to a paywall. Did it say the sisters have been found?!
I hope so….

Thank you both for the additional information. I’m very glad those two young girls are not lost in the Bronx. I hope they have a support network of family or friends who will help them cope with their mother’s death and the trauma of witnessing it. RIP Cindy Maxwell.

More details here:

“A 45-year-old mother of two was found shot to death and decomposing in her Bronx apartment, cops said Sunday.

And in an eerie twist, the victim’s two young daughters went missing the same day a neighbor recalled hearing what he believes were the fatal shots — only to be found safe on Sunday afternoon.”

“Around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, the NYPD sent out a media alert that the victim’s two daughters, Latasha, 11, and Niasia, 6, were missing and last seen leaving their home around 10 a.m. Wednesday.

About 20 minutes later, police sent out an update that they’d been found safe.

An NYPD spokeswoman said they were found Sunday afternoon but wouldn’t elaborate because the murder is still under investigation and the killer is on the loose.

A law enforcement source said they were found at an apartment building in Mount Hope, about 2½ miles from their home.

A man there was arrested, and the two girls were taken into a police van, according to a resident who wished to be anonymous. Police did not immediately announce a bust in the slaying.“

Heartbreaking.

Another update:

“OLINVILLE, Bronx (WABC) -- Police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of a Bronx mother.

Officials say 48-year-old Lacon Brown, the victim's boyfriend, is facing murder and manslaughter charges.”

“Authorities say the daughters were in the apartment at the time their mother was murdered. The older daughter told detectives she was aware of the murder, police said.

Brown is set to be arraigned Wednesday”

The article below has a paywall, but I was able to read the title which said the boyfriend is an ex-con:
