Investigator Ryan Hickey -- the first member of the SWAT team that entered the house -- walked us through the tense moments after they blew down the front door with explosives.

Hickey said when he entered the home, he saw Daniel Perez and one of the four defendants on trial now -- Inalia Rolland. His team quickly took them into custody.

When asked by the defense, why they took them into custody, Hickey said, "We had reason to believe they were in imminent danger of physical harm."

Hickey then located the two victims tied up in the same room.

"We're getting through it methodically, one piece at a time, and we're confident when we're done, we've presented an appropriate picture for the jury of what occurred. Certainly, we'll be asking them to provide a guilty verdict."

Twelve people took the stand on Friday. Testimony will continue next week.

Woman Who Already Pleaded Guilty in Kidnapping Case Describes How it Escalated

http://www.twcnews.com/nys/rochester/news/2016/11/7/u-of-r-kidnapping-trial-november-7-2016.html

Gigliotti, now convicted of kidnapping 2nd, testified that she and Samantha Hughes, who's also already pleaded guilty, met up with the two victims on Exchange Boulevard and took them to a house on Harvest Street.

Gigliotti admitted to knowing the young men were being taken there to get beat up. Once at the house, she says things happened quickly.

Gigliotti says although those who attacked the victims were masked, she knew who some of them were. Gigiliotti testified going with one of the masked men, who she identified as Lydell Strickland, and withdrawing money from one of the victim's accounts, then returning to Exchange Boulevard to take the victim's car.

DNA Evidence Brings Up 2 New Names in UofR Kidnapping Trial

http://www.twcnews.com/nys/rochester/news/2016/11/7/u-of-r-kidnapping-trial-november-7-2016.html

The trial of the four suspects accused in the Dec. 2015 kidnapping and assault of two University of Rochester students, which was on hold for Election Day, will resume on Monday of next week.

Frank Ciardi, a defense attorney for Alcarez-Ubilies, questioned Honeycutt regarding DNA from a man named Tyler Ennis. Ciardi says Ennis was at 22 Harvest Street during the abduction but was never ordered to submit a DNA sample.

"Not taking a DNA sample from a person that's directly involved or in connection with at least the events of that evening, to me, raises a lot of questions," Ciardi said.

Ennis is not charged in the indictment and neither is a man named Josue Rentas. Ciardi claims Rentas was also there during the ordeal. Although authorities obtained his DNA, it was never tested.

"Now we don't know if it's included as a DNA sample or excluded," Ciardi maintained. "I don't know why that happened but to me it raises a lot of questions as to the involvement of these two individuals."

Closing arguments made in UR kidnapping case

http://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/news/2016/11/17/closing-arguments-made-ur-kidnapping-case/94019128/

After three weeks of sometimes horrific and disturbing testimony, a jury Friday will begin deliberating the fate of two men and two women police have linked to the brutal December kidnapping and torture of two University of Rochester students.

Four defense attorneys tried in closing arguments Thursday to convince the jury that the accused were either not involved in the crimes, or that there was not solid evidence to prove they were.

Assistant District Attorney Matthew Schwartz countered in his closing that the proof was "overwhelming," and that the testimony of people who might be considered unreliable — drug dealers and accomplices in the crimes — was corroborated by evidence ranging from DNA to cellphone texts to an actual video inside the city home where the two were held hostage.

UR abduction-torture sentencing: Strickland gets max sentence

http://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/news/2016/12/21/four-sentenced-ur-abduction-torture/95693434/

Strickland received 25 to life for each victim in the attack.

Renzi said that he couldn't think of any redeeming qualities from Strickland: "How can someone do this to another human being?"

Renzi also siad the proof was overwhelming that Strickland was the principal actor for the torture.

The other three defendants — David Alcaraz-Ubiles, Inalia Rolldan and Ruth Lora — were each convicted of five criminal charges, including kidnapping and weapons-connected charges. The jury acquitted Alcaraz-Ubiles of assaulting the two victims.

Rolldan and Lora were first to be sentenced and both received seven years.

Alcaraz-Ubile was sentenced to 15 years for his role in the crimes. That will run consecutive to another 15-year sentence he is serving for a previous assault conviction.
