GUILTY NY - Orsolya Gaal, 51, body found in duffel bag, Queens, Apr 2022 *Arrest* #3

  • #581

This article is behind a paywall, but, in summary, The NY Daily News interviewed DB in jail. DB professes his innocence in OG’s murder while admitting to his post-murder movements (e.g., getting hospital treatment under a false name and throwing OG’s belongings into the Hudson River).

The big piece of information that I have not seen reported elsewhere (though I may be behind) is that DB called OG’s husband the day before DB’s arrest to give his condolences, admitting to an affair but denying involvement.

Seriously, what?!

ETA:Thank you for the article, I’m surprised he’s talking to the press.

I think he’s just throwing excuses at the wall to see what sticks. He has already admitted to killing and moving her body, and his post-killing behaviour demonstrates his guilt.

The phone call he made to her husband was released in court documents:

‘ “I wanted to call and say sorry for what happened,” he said. “I was having an intimate relationship with Orsolya, we have been intimate many times, one time was at your house. She had a few other lovers. I did not do this. I will go to the police precinct to talk to them.” ’

I don’t believe anything he says and he’s easily defeated by the facts and truth of the case.

Interesting info about "false name".
Does it mean he had a fake passport?

As for conversation between him and the husband - see the previous page here (NYP link) :)

He said the fake name that he gave the hospital was ‘Javier Parra’, per the link @Countem posted.

I don’t recall LE telling us, or court documents indicating that he also was known by that name.

Beautiful article on Orsolya's memorial. It's very touching to read the comments of her family.
Recommend this Orsoyla's memorial service to everyone involved in this case, extremely touching

Have there been any court updates? This is the last coverage (July 7) that I saw.

The sentence is disgusting

it's outrageous isn't it?
I wonder why the sentence was downgraded from murder to manslaughter. This may be why the sentence was also downgraded, so to speak.

I would imagine the family wants nothing to do with a trial. It's a terrible sentence imo but maybe in 20 years they all will have had lots of therapy. That's my hope.

seems a light sentence all things considered. But then, a trial would have probably been hellacious for her husband and children given the nature of how DB and Orsoyla were acquainted. I hope they find some closure and peace.

IMO, lazy DA. He won't spend 25 years in prison. What a travesty.

It may have been the wishes of the family as well, to avoid a public trial and move forward with their lives, especially since there are two children involved.

Not sure how New York works, but in California they often make deals with a sentence of 20 years to life with the understanding that legally they may spend life but no less than 20 years. Criminals see hope in such sentencing but they usually spend life.

11/2/22

Bonola pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter on Wednesday morning, according to a press release from the office of Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz.

Queens Supreme Court Justice Michael Aloise said he would sentence the defendant to 25 years in prison plus five years of post-release supervision, Katz’s office said. Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 16, 2022.

Prosecutors originally charged Bonola with murder, but they dropped that charge in return for a plea, according to WABC’s report.

[..]

DA Katz indicated that the punishment fits the crime. Assuming Bonola serves his entire sentence, he won’t be released until he’s 69 years old. Plus, as WABC noted, a murder conviction in New York carries a 25-to-life sentence. This sentence is close to that — and without a trial.

“This heinous killing devastated an entire family, left two boys without a mother, and horrified the surrounding community,” Katz said. “I want to thank my prosecutors for their exhaustive efforts in securing this plea. In pleading guilty, the defendant has accepted responsibility and is being held fully accountable for his criminal actions. We express our sincerest condolences to the victim’s family and hope that today’s plea will allow them to begin to heal.”

Shouldn't his sentence be increased b/c of illegal status?

Or is it of no consequence?

How can it be manslaughter with so many stabbings (55)?

Surely there was intent to kill.

no, you dont get more years due to immigration status. you do get a ICE detainer and deported at the end of your sentence.

Let's hope so.

Downgraded conviction could bump the situation into "sanctuary city" status where ICE detainers are ignored. Dude could be released in the middle of the night to melt into civil society once again. Already has an alias track record if I recall correctly.

Is the DA on the ballot this week?
