Two possibilities IMO:

The Hudson River runs right past Albany. Many people have drowned there over the decades.

Or, Patrick might simply have hopped a train and started a new life in any number of major cities, such as NYC, Boston or even Canada, as Albany isn't far from any of them and well-connected to transportation routes.
