"Ullah is from Chittagong, a port city on the southeastern coast of Bangladesh, according to the country's police chief. He had no criminal record there and last visited the country on Sept. 8, the chief said."

Had a livery driver's license, but didn't drive a yellow cab:

"Ullah had a livery driver’s license between March 2012 and March 2015, which he allowed to expire, a Taxi and Limousine Commission spokesman said. The agency clarified that Ullah never had a license that allowed him to drive a yellow cab."

Inthedetails, thank you! Exactly.

"As taxi and for-hire vehicle drivers are independent contractors and not employees, I have no way of knowing whether he drove for any particular base, or whether he simply got the license but didn't drive at all," Fromberg said. "That said, since he held an FHV license, if in fact he did drive, we do know that it could not have been a yellow taxi."

At least your government will deal harshly with them if they survive - the death penalty or LWP.

Here in the UK his Yuman Rites would be considered more important than those of the rest of us, and leftist lawyers and spokespersons would be queuing up to make excuses for him and blaming British society for his alienation.

I really wish that was the case every time here, but sadly, it is not. <modsnip> Enemy combatants. Even though they have clearly proclaimed they are at WAR against all of the infidels which of course includes all Americans and other free nations around the world.

I was very sad to learn one of our biggest <modsnip> liberal cable news channels didn't even have breaking news about the bombing in NYC this morning even though they were told about it immediately by AP reporters. Instead, their leading breaking big news story this morning was about how many diet sodas our President consumes daily. Sigh. (rolls eyes)

Only when twitter lit up like a firestorm did they begin to even cover the actual big important news story of the day about another terrorist bombing NYC.

Fox News was the first to carry the NYC bombing breaking news this morning minutes after it happened. As I usually do, I flipped through the other major cable news channels and was appalled to see that CNN was not even covering it... although I was not the least bit surprised.

So there are many right here who will want to give these fanatical Islamic extremist terrorists (war criminals) all the rights we have.... even though they are truly enemy combatants who have declared war on us, and not merely just criminal defendants.

Wonder if he has any connections to the driver who hit pedestrians in lower Manhattan on Halloween?? (Not a fact, merely wondering aloud.)

Admin Warning

I won't hesitate to close this thread if it becomes a liberal v. conservative political tit-for-tat bashing thread. Stop it NOW or it gets closed. A couple of the same people always always bringing the same political stuff into breaking news threads are looking at TOs soon.

Soon after the explosion, police descended on at least three Brooklyn addresses connected to Ullah or his relatives — two in the Kensington section and one in Old Mill Basin.

A former Mill Basin neighborhood said the suspect lived there with his parents and two older brothers. She said she would see him leaving the house with camera equipment and assumed he was on his way to work.

"The family is very friendly, very nice, but he was quiet. Never talked to anyone, stayed to himself," the neighbor said.

it seems like most mass killers are quiet. Keep to themselves. Too many to keep track of, but the Las Vegas shooter kept to himself.

IMO, you're a wonderful poster and I love, love, love your insight, oceanblueeyes!! Thank you for sharing available news, and your perspective. I appreciate you.

*deep breath*

I'm a journalist — have been nearly all my life.

*ducks*

I'm just jumping off your post to (hopefully) add some perspective and maybe add context: Truth is, we don't know the journalistic reasons any network weighed before they chose to go live with this morning's breaking news story.

Professionally, yes, AP is "the standard," but ethically, it isn't a substitute for independent verification by any other news media outlet. Maybe other networks were checking the validity of the bombing with law enforcement and other sources before going live — they'd rather be right than first? At least in this case? Can't fault anyone for that.

I'm glad the majors (all of them) are being mindful in their coverage and *trying* not to rush anything on-air until it's confirmed. Maybe a corner's been turned and this will become standard (like it used to be).

One can hope!

NYC blast suspect Akayed Ullah aimed to avenge Muslim deaths, source says

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-new...spect-identified-27-year-old-brooklyn-n828361

(updated)

The Brooklyn man who allegedly detonated a crude pipe bomb in a New York City subway station told investigators he did it in the name of ISIS to avenge the deaths of Muslims around the world, a senior law enforcement official told NBC News.

Akayed Ullah, a 27-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant, said he learned how to make the explosive device by reading terrorist propaganda online, the official said.

Was that individual Bangladeshi as well?

I researched it for myself. That suspect was from Uzbekistan. For context, here are where those two places are located on the globe. I'm going to venture a guess and say, no, they had no connections.

NYC explosion suspect told authorities he's self-inspired from ISIS online propaganda: Sources
ABC News

(way out there notes: Why would he say that? Why did the Chelsea flake, the bike path freak, this one all survive? Trouble recruiting dead enders or tactical?)

(This may be why there is confusion re the various reason this specific creep is said to have given.)

A pro-Islamic State media group, Maqdisi Media, portrayed the attempted terror attack as a response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recognition on Wednesday of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, according to the SITE Intelligence Group. SITE tracks and analyzes online activity by extremist groups.

Suspect in Times Square blast described as disgruntled, ISIS-inspired

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news...us-terminal-manhattan-times-square/939724001/

Multiple media outlets, citing law enforcement sources, said Ullah was inspired by ISIS but may not have had any direct contact with the militant group. Gov. Andrew Cuomo described Ullah as disgruntled but would not discuss a specific motive for the attack. O'Neill also declined to discuss a specific motive.

snip

CNN, citing a law enforcement source, said suspect was upset with an "incursion into Gaza." Gaza has been the scene of violence since President Trump announced last week that the U.S. would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Disgruntled is the key word in these situations. An individual feeling discriminated against, hated, and angry about it will become easy prey for organizations such as ISIS, AQ, KKK, etc. It's a certain mindset those groups look for, and they are usually successful in recruiting someone who is disenfranchised or feeling left behind by society.

From Limo Driver to Subway Bomber
Reuters

"The Bangladeshi suspect in Monday's pipe bomb explosion beneath New York's Times Square is an angry former limousine driver who learned to build a bomb on the internet at his Brooklyn apartment, officials said."
...
Several U.S. officials familiar with the investigation told Reuters there was no information indicating Ullah was previously known to any U.S. spy or law enforcement agency for any connection to militant groups. But that does not rule out the possibility some connection could be found."
...
U.S. investigators believe he was self-radicalized after entering the United States, most likely by watching militant propaganda on the internet, the officials said, adding that they were unaware of any specific militant video that might have led him to produce his faulty explosive device.
...
New York state Governor Andrew Cuomo called the suspect a "lone wolf," similar to the suspect in the most recent attack in New York, when an Uzbek immigrant driving a rented truck ran over people on a bicycle path on Oct. 31, killing eight.

New York Bomber Was Inspired by ISIS Christmas Attacks, Officials Say
NYTimes

He chose the location because of its Christmas-themed posters, recalling strikes in Europe against Christmas markets, he told investigators, and set off bomb in retaliation for U.S. airstrikes on ISIS targets in Syria and elsewhere, several law enforcement officials said.
...
Mr. Ullah acted alone, Mayor Bill de Blasio said, adding that no other devices had been found.
...
The authorities were searching Mr. Ullah’s residence on Ocean Parkway, pursuant to a federal warrant, one law enforcement official said. While no formal announcement had been made, both federal and local law enforcement officials indicated that Mr. Ullah would be prosecuted in federal court in Manhattan by the office of the acting United States attorney for the Southern District of New York, Joon H. Kim. The attack is being investigated by the Joint Terrorism Task Force, which is made up largely of F.B.I. agents and New York detectives, along with investigators from a score of other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

UPDATE 2-New York suspect had no criminal record in Bangladesh -police
Reuters

Ullah was from the southeastern Bangladeshi district of Chittagong, Hoque said. He last visited Bangladesh on Sept. 8"

While I respect what you suggest, post colonial disgruntlement runs deep and is nothing new in Bangladesh. So much of it going around, that it alone explains nothing, it seems to me. What he followed on the internet and how far back his radical ideas go may tell more. Was he already radicalized this Sept. when he is said to have travelled?

What to Expect for Your Evening Commute After the Port Authority Blast

https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/loc...anges-Commute-Commuters-Subway-463373723.html

The MTA said all trains were running normally and making all stops Monday afternoon, with the only readily visible remnant of the morning's explosion being the closed passageway between the 42nd Street/Port Authority Bus Terminal stop and the Times Square-42nd Street station where the blast went off at about 7:15 p.m.

snip

The Port Authority Bus Terminal has also reopened and all routes have resumed, but the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey is asking riders to check with their individual carriers for itinerary changes.

snip

Drivers should expect to see an increase in security that could cause some delays in and around New York City for the evening commute, however.

snip

The explosion is not affecting LIRR, Metro-North, NJ Transit or Amtrak service in the area.

Wonder if his family will be deported?

Good question. It's my understanding that the suspect came here to be with other family members who were already living in the U.S. Not sure of their status, but "...Ullah came to the United States from Bangladesh with an immigrant visa on Feb. 21, 2011. He is a legal permanent resident with a green card..." A good case against chain migration. :moo:
