GUILTY NY - Prince Joshua Avitto, 6, stabbed to death in NYC elevator, 12 June 2014

Jails and prisons can hold onto prisoners for so long. Sadly this type crime often happens. Horrible he attacked innocent children.

With all the surveillance, don't they have videos or photos of the suspect?

That was apparently noted by policiticians as well.

"But the search for the assailant was hampered by a lack of video evidence at the Boulevard Houses, Chief Boyce said Monday.

That led to criticism from elected officials about the history of delays installing surveillance cameras at New York City Housing Authority buildings. On Monday, budget officials approved the installation of a camera in the lobby of the building where Sunday's stabbing took place."

There need to be stricter laws in the first place that keep serious offenders incarcerated longer. Too many times they are paroled early for "good" behavior and, then, when they're released they commit crimes more serious than what they were originally convicted of.

But, if this man is truly mentally ill, that is another issue that needs to be re-examined. Closing institutions for the mentally ill was a mistake because now they often lack resources and the needed supervision to ensure they remain on their meds. People who are mentally ill often don't recognize that their perception of reality is distorted and so don't see a need to take their medications. Once they are no longer minors, they can make independent decisions about their treatment. We are also seeing more offenders who develop symptoms of mental illness as adults, likely due to years of drug abuse in some cases.

I worked with developmentally disabled populations for ten years. Many of my clients were integrated into group homes from large institutions, some of which were located at state prisons. Whether people were confined to the criminal facility or the mental facility of prison-operated institutions was at the discretion of the judge. I knew people who had been placed in the portion of the prison housing people with developmental and mental disorders after committing petty crimes because they were deemed mentally deficient. The life they described there was brutal, marked by abuse. Of those I worked with, the ones who spent most of their lives institutionalized had more aggressive behaviors and behaviors more resistant to treatment than those raised by their families because the behaviors they learned while institutionalized were deeply ingrained in them -- often as a matter of self-preservation.

My point is that people with mental illness who are incarcerated initially for petty crimes likely learn aggressive behaviors from living in a hostile prison environment. IMO, our society really needs separate facilities for the mentally ill where they can receive needed treatment and the supervision necessary to ensure they are taking their medications on schedule. When mental institutions closed, the system did a 180 degree turn. We need a balanced approach.

A shame they weren't proactive. Too often it takes a tragedy like this to motivate people in a place of responsibility to take action.

Also in this article is says LE are investigating to see if this same person killed 18 yr old Tanaya Copeland on the Friday before stabbing the children. Very disturbing the community is easy pickings when these type of criminals go in and out of prison on revolving doors. Jmo

Three beautiful spirits gone.

Just before 10:30 pm on Friday, May 30th, 18 year-old Tanaya Grant-Copeland, was repeatedly stabbed (some sources say 30 times) and left to die on a sidewalk (Stanley Ave/Linwood St). The following night, a vigil remembering Tanaya was held at that site.

On Sunday, June 2, Prince Joshua "P.J." Avitto was stabbed to death 15 days before his 7th birthday. His 7 year old friend, Mikayla Capers, was also attacked and is fighting for her life in hospital. They were attacked in an elevator and left to die.

P.J.'s funeral was held today, June 6th. His parents are distraught. Mikayla's family is in shock. The community is shaken.

On Monday, June 1st, NYPD announced the possible connection between the attacks due to "several common factors." One of which was the kind of knife used in the attacks.

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2014/06/02/suspect-sought-after-2-kids-stabbed-1-fatally-in-brooklyn/

By the evening of Wednesday, June 4th, DNA on the knife found near the second crime scene linked a suspect to the crime, and DSH was taken into custory. DSH had been released on May 23 after completing his sentence for domestic assault.

And these are only the crimes DSH is alleged to have committed since his release of which the public is aware.

It is my hope that Not Criminally Responsible is not an option for the judge and/or jury to consider when this goes to trial. My heart goes out to the victims' families.

Thanks for the additional links. He gets out of jail on 5.23 and possibly kills two people inside of 10 days. My mind is in a knot, I can't articulate a thought. I guess it's anger that he was released from jail. Jmo

This sounds like good news.

7 yr old survivor Mikayla Capers had been stabbed 16 times on June 1st in the violent attack that left her friend 6 yr old PJ Avitto dead. She is, according to her family, improving in the hospital, drawing and colouring.

Grandfather Surroy Capers called her condition “day to day,” adding: “We sit, we play, we color with her.”

An accused child killer has been carted off to Bellevue Hospital — likely for psychiatric treatment — for stabbing a pair of defenseless kids.

“That doesn’t do anything for us,” said Sharod Jean-Pierre, whose 6-year-old brother Prince Joshua (P.J.) Avitto was stabbed to death a week ago, allegedly by Daniel St. Hubert...

St. Hubert claimed the guards transporting him to the hospital abused him by banging his head against the wall and tightening the cuffs until they hurt him.

Daniel St. Hubert, the alleged killer of Tanaya and PJ, who is also alleged to have stabbed Mikayla, is also now believed to have stabbed a homeless man in a Chelsea subway station.

In a detailed article about St. Hubert's troubled past, reporters G.B. Smith, R. Parascandola, B. Paddock, and C. Siemaszko, reveal that DSH attacked his mother at least three time, was jailed for five years for the crime of trying to strangle his mother, refused psychiatric treatment in jail, was given no medication upon his release. They state that DSH's sister pleaded with authorities for help before and after his release. None was given. His sister also told reporters that her brother had been diagnosed as "a paranoid schizophrenic with aspects of drug-induced psychosis."

Mayor de Blasio weighed in on the arrest, saying that unleashing dangerous, mentally ill ex-cons like St. Hubert on society is a “fundamental American problem.”
“The prison system has been used as a de facto mental health system for too many individuals,” he said. “We should not be surprised that there are so many tragic situations . . . this is something we have to fix as a society.”

We have to do better at identifying and properly treating our mentally ill and protecting the public.

I don't know the answer but this is just heartbreaking. So much destruction of so many lives in such a brief time.

I agree about mentally ill and protecting the public. Seems from reading these cases nothing is really done until someone is seriously hurt or killed. He attacked his mother his sister begged for help. Roaming the streets stabbing people. Those babies didn't have a chance in that elevator. Wthwthwth

I wish Mikayla all the support, love and prayers she will need to recover from this heinous crime. She has been changed forever. She has already proved to the wood that she is the epitome of a survivor. Her healing has only just begun, inside and out.
:heartluv:

P.J. was taken from this earth, his light extinguished with such abominable violence that it takes my breath away. I weep at the thought of both children's suffering.

My faith allows me to believe P.J. has been called home. He has earned his wings, like so many of the other child victim cases we work on and sleuth here. I pray his family and loved ones will find a way to go on without this amazing little boy. :rose:

May :justice: for both victims be swift.

If we are going to use prison as "de facto mental health system" at the very least they should have kept him in prison. Obviously releasing a violent untreated man into unsuspecting public was a disaster waiting to happen.

"7-year-old victim of elevator stabbing returns home as Brooklyn butcher makes court appearance"

Mikayla Capers walked out of a hospital Wednesday, more than a week after she and 6-year-old friend Prince Joshua (P.J.) Avitto were stabbed in an elevator at the Boulevard Houses in Brooklyn. The man accused of the stabbing, Daniel St. Hubert, was in court for a brief hearing, where he tried to speak during the appearance attended by members of P.J.’s family."
