Usually, though, in a case like this, with the patient reported missing, the facility will counsel the patient about letting his family or LE know that he is safe. Not necessarily his location, but safe. The Patient Advocacy, the Facility Legal Department, and the Ethics Committee, get involved in a heartbeat to determine the best thing to do. HIPPA is involved definitely, and it's the patients' choice, to tell or not, but with LE involved, pressure will be put on him to at least let LE tell his family he is safe.
He could be in a facility - a scared, fed up, depressed, stressed out, confused man getting help, maybe in Warwick, RI, where he lived once. He is an adult and does not need to notify anyone that he is there, even if a manhunt was coordinated to try to find him. The news is big around here in New York, but not in Rhode Island I am sure. That woman from Carmel who went missing from Brooklyn was in a hospital and just came home one day. Her mother had no idea where she was until she got back.
