Idk... But my hunch is that if anyone there in that church community has any suspicion of a suicide, then all bets are off. Church +suicide don't mix.

My cousin is a detective. I talked to her about this case tonight, and showed her the known facts and NamUs for RM. The endangered missing categorization led her to the conclusion that at some point, he was suicidal. Because of HIPA laws, someone may not be disclosing something. MOO based on cuz' influence. So lucky to have her...:blushing:

Or can he just tell Roberts mom and sister?

In my opinion, they would tell the family he was found. They wouldn't string the family along with this "missing" business. Why should they? They'll close the case and inform the family the reason why they are closing the case. However, LE may not tell the family RM's whereabouts, if RM doesn't want contact. Maybe they will say something general, such as RM is living in another state.

This is just my opinion, but based on what I have seen over the years. There are privacy laws, but LE is not going to keep a charade up for the "missing" either.

This man was found safe. Wonder what the Medical Examiner's Office had to do with it.

If Robert was fed up with his life and deliberately disappeared, that's kind of tough on his children.

Actually, when people disappear voluntarily and for their own purposes, it's tough on a lot of people. Selfish, even.

IMO it is a selfish act to disappear one's self, but it happens all the time, i.e in most MP cases. Some are surely medical, i.e a breakdown of some kind or depression or a mental illness. I never understand why those of sound mind do not at least leave a note. I guess people don't like to admit or acknowledge that they are running away from life, responsibilities, etc. and knowingly causing pain and possibly financial despair to others.

IMO a lot of adults have probably thought at least fleetingly of chucking it all and taking off. I know I have. But I would never leave those left behind wondering if I had been abducted, murdered or killed myself.

RM's disappearance makes no sense to me in so many ways. The only theory that makes a little bit of sense is suicide, IMO. And even that doesn't really, with what we have been told, unless parts of the story are staged, i.e the car, so as not to suggest this option.

Good question. I wonder about that too. He could work under the table or maybe he took someone else's identification and is working under their name. He could have stolen it from a friend, relative or bought it from a homeless person. He could have their SS#, birth date, place of birth, and full name, then ordered the docs. Who knows? Maybe he is living with someone and is still trying to find a way to work without being "Robert Mayer." Perhaps he hasn't figured it out yet.

I do wonder if LE flags Social Security numbers or if they only check for activity on occasion. I've heard of "missing" people being found years after being reported missing and during that time, lived and worked under their real SS#s and names.

Maybe he died of natural causes? Meaning, no homicide, which suggests he left his old life willingly. Just guessing . .

Identity change is a lot more common nowadays than many of us think.

You can change your identity to escape from creditors, ex-lover or business partners, as long you find a legal way to do it

Thanks for the info. This could explain alot. Although, he isn't "endangered missing" on the Namus website. He is only listed as "missing." On the CUE site, he is "endangered missing." I don't know the criteria for this classification on CUE and who posts the info.
The HIPAA laws are definitely a consideration though. He could have been suicidal or maybe he was going through some kind of rehabilitation or therapy before he went missing.

If he had age related sight issues, he could easily pick up a pair of cheap readers from a pharmacy or job lot store. Good point though. If he had prescription eyeglasses, I doubt he would leave them behind if he was taking off for a new life. Maybe he was wearing contacts?

IIRC, IM was asked this question and responded that he didn't always wear his helmet and the helmet was not missing.
