NY - Sean "Diddy" Combs charged with racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution, Sept. 17, 2024

Defense's cross-examination of Ventura will begin tomorrow morning

Judge Arun Subramanian has dismissed the jury for the day.

The defense will begin their cross-examination of Cassie Ventura will tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. ET.

The judge said the prosecution and defense need to resolve issues regarding the cross-examination before it begins.

Defense attorney Anna Estevao said she expects cross-examination to stretch into Friday.

Scott Mescudi, also known as rapper Kid Cudi, was just mentioned in the federal criminal trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs.

Kid Cudi has been a player in the story of Combs and his former girlfriend Cassie Ventura since her civil lawsuit against the music mogul in 2023.

Ventura, who is on the stand for the second day today, testified that Combs learned she was dating Kid Cudi during a “Freak Off” in 2011. She said that Combs told her “he was going to hurt Scott and I.”

Ventura also testified that Combs told her Kid Cudi’s car would be blown up — which, at some point, it did.

The testimony mirrors statements Ventura made as part of a civil suit. Ventura alleged in her civil claim that Combs found emails between her and Kid Cudi and “became enraged” at Ventura, later telling her that he was “going to blow up Kid Cudi’s car,” and that was “around that time, Kid Cudi’s car exploded in his driveway.”

When this case hit the news I was reading Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs. This is a remarkable true story of a slave that ran away to freedom.

I found it interesting that when she described Luke, a slave of this disabled man who was horribly cruel. He endured beatings, being tied to the man's bed and made to do freak behaviors to him. I paraphrase but I found it interesting that this language is still used today. Freak is not a word I would use.

Also I have heard black folks today ask "Where do you stay?" . I, being white would ask "Where do you live?". I suppose they use stay because at any time a slave could be sold.

There were more but those 2 come to mind.

Imo this relates to P Diddy because it is all about power. Black men in slavery had no power and to a certain degree still do not. Sean Combs' money gave him power. I noted that his nickname for Cassie was CC (Cassie Combs). He didn't marry her but he claimed her and basically made her his slave.
People need to be trauma informed to understand abuse, and why Cassie did not just "leave".

A lot like that movie with Tina Turner, "What Love Has to do With It". Tina finally escaped from Ike Turner, barefoot and without a dime. He kept her isolated, broke, and abused.

We're now seeing the full unedited 15-minute-long video of Sean "Diddy" Combs assaulting Cassie in a hotel hallway in 2016, and it reveals the full story -- more than the CNN version showed -- of what went down between them that morning.

Here’s what Ventura has said so far today, as court takes a break:

  • Falling in love with Combs: Ventura confirmed she was in a relationship with Combs for 11 years and testified that she loved him and believed he loved her. Ventura said she fell in love with Combs’ “real personality.” Asked about her desire to make Combs happy and if that included agreeing to “Freak Offs,” which is what Combs called the drug-fueled sex performances he orchestrated, Ventura responded, “There’s a lot more to that.”
  • Jury shown sexually graphic text messages: Some graphic texts reviewed by the jury came as Ventura and Combs were planning a “Freak Off.” Ventura also asked Combs if he had “any more pills” in texts shown by the defense. Ventura testified that she was using opiates like Norco around the time of the messages.
  • More on “Freak Offs”: Jurors saw text messages from 2009 that Ventura confirmed reflected the “open communication” between the pair. She told the defense that at the time, she felt comfortable expressing her needs to Combs over participating. In the messages, Ventura said she needed to “feel safe” to be more open sexually. She told Combs a recent “Freak Off” left her feeling “dirty and grimy” and noted their early intimacy felt different when they were “so in love.” Ventura confirmed she and Combs had conversations about the “swingers’ lifestyle” but that “Freak Offs” were “very different.” Ventura testified that she did not want Combs’ employees to know about “Freak Offs” and she never told her friends about them.
  • Combs’ behavior: Ventura confirmed her previous testimony that Combs would regularly call her incessantly if she didn’t answer the phone or otherwise set him off. Ventura previously testified that Combs had strong opinions about her physical appearance and controlled what she wore.
  • Previous relationship: Ventura testified that she met Combs through Ryan Leslie, a music producer she dated for about three years. Leslie was about 10 years old than her, Ventura said, meaning Combs was the second older man she’d dated at that point.

Defense suggests it was Cassie who ended Combs’ career

Nearly two hours into cross examination, the questioning of Cassie seems to have taken a turn from what had been mostly friendly questioning.

Estevao asked Cassie if it’s “fair to say” that Combs’ career was ruined after she sued him in November 2023, making public for the first time the concept of “freak-offs.”

“I could understand that,” Cassie responded.

Cassie testified earlier this week that when she tied to end their relationship, Combs threatened to end her career by releasing degrading sexual videos of her.

In a July 2013 text message exchange, Comb’s defense lawyer noted, it was Cassie who raised the idea of having a “freak-off,” writing to Combs: “Wish we could’ve FO’d before you left.”

Cassie has said she felt compelled to participate in such encounters to keep Combs happy and because she enjoyed spending one-on-one time with him afterward.

In a 2017 text message, Cassie told Combs: “I love our FOs when we both want it,” using the initials for “freak-off.”

On the stand Thursday, Cassie said: “I would say loving FOs were just words at that point.”
