AUSA Slavik: There also a case by Judge [Kimba] Wood. Mann Act cases with fear, violence and threats routinely get significant sentences. This is not a simple transportation case - but it has major aggravators. As to Cassie, he hit het and stomped on her

AUSA Slavik: Admitting to violence in front of the jury as part of a trial strategy is not accountability. Freak offs were extended performances of sexual degradation and humiliation. Cassie and Jane did not want to have sex with strangers. He made them do it

AUSA Slavik: He had an escort urinate in Cassie's mouth until she choked. Her victim impact statement makes clear she still has nightmare and flashbacks, and the scars on her body. Jane's text make clear her anguish and trauma

AUSA Slavik: Mia said she got PTSD and anxiety. Deonte Nash said he was caused lasting damage. Capricorn Clark says he blacklisted her once she spoke up. [Chef] Jourdan Atkinson wrote how she was impacted. It was real and serious.

AUSA Slavik: He blames doctors for prescriptions. He pretends he is the victim. He hasn't accepted responsibility for his criminal conduct. The information provided to his expert was incomplete. He will pose a danger at any age. He choked Jane at 54 years old

AUSA: Prostitution causes other problems; it happens out of public view. General deterrence is needed. Send a message to all victims and to the public that this defendant's crimes are serious. You could encourage or discourage abusers

Judge: Let's take a break.

He booked speaking engagements next week! I can’t see that helping him. It doesn’t show remorse, unless he is going to speak as a perpetrator to women on domestic violence.

Watching news right now, prosecution wants 135 month sentence, that is...11 years or so .maybe with time served already, down to 9 years. Defense wants time served.

Federal sentence guidelines, I don't think that the judge has a lot of latitude here?

He intimidated his former assistant so she declined to make a statement today. Maybe this implies that she didn’t take hush money from Combs?

Really need an emoji throwing up.

His freak off videos should be played again, equal time.

It doesn’t matter that he is a good father and an “important” rapper. Who cares about that when he has done violent and humiliating acts.

It’s all a facade to bypass his real self.

It’s been a long and emotional morning inside the courtroom, where I’m seated just a few rows behind Combs during his hearing.

The courtroom is packed with at least 30 members of Combs’ entourage, including his mother and all of his children except one.

One of his ex-girlfriends is also seated in the back row. She had made numerous allegations of abuse against Combs, but has since written letters of support in favour of Combs being released from jail.

For most of the morning, Combs maintained a non-reactive demeanour, sitting back in his seat and listening quietly as prosecutors accused him of ruining his victims’ lives.

The court is now breaking for lunch, and will resume at 14:00 local time (19:00 BST).

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ defense team is highlighting the accomplishments of the rapper as a Black man in the music industry and his cultural significance to Black people — a tactic that was similarly used during OJ Simpson’s trial, CNN reporter Lisa Respers France says.

Here’s what the defense said today on this topic:

“Mr. Combs starting his own record label as a Black, young male back then was almost kind of jokeable,” defense attorney Nicole Westmoreland said today. “This changed the industry, and it changed the culture, but more importantly, it changed countless individuals’ lives.”

France says the defense is leaning into Combs’ Blackness, and that’s what Simpson’s team did as well.

“O.J. Simpson was a man who spent almost his entire life and career trying not to be defined as a Black man. But then when he was charged with a crime, his defense team leaned into that Blackness to say, ‘you know, look, this Black man can’t get a fair trial in America,’” France said.

Combs’ defense team is making his significance in Black culture the focal point.

“And they’re not wrong about that, but they want you to focus on that, and less so what he was accused of doing,” she said.

As six of Sean “Diddy” Combs’ children spoke at the rapper’s sentencing hearing today, they huddled around each other in support.

The three sons and three daughters stood together at the very small podium in the courtroom.

One of the brothers was on the arm of his sister, who was crying throughout her statement, struggling to get the words out at times.

As they spoke in turns, the disgraced music mogul was visibly getting uncomfortable, shifting in his chair and placing his head on his hand

Judge Arun Subramanian has been hard to read today.

During most of the lawyers’ arguments, he looked directly at the attorneys the entire time, with his hand sometimes on his chin.

A big clue to what he is thinking came when he indicated that he might follow federal guidelines for sentencing, between five to seven years in prison. He also rejected arguments from both sides, seemingly skeptical of their pushes for different sentence lengths.

ut he seemed sensitive to the pleas of Combs’ children, who begged him for a lighter sentence, calling their father a “superhero” and “a changed man”.

Subramanian told the children how appreciative he was of their statements, saying they would help him in his decision.

It’s unclear if the court will hear anything more from the prosecution than a statement read by an attorney on behalf of one of the victims, none of whom seemed to want to speak in court today.
