In this news coverage, I believe the word 'squatters' is used to just describe that strangers were living in the home.

I think the issue of the legality/or illegality, of what they were doing, is something else entirely.

What I wonder is, how did they know the apartment was vacant, when it was in an upscale building with a private elevator? How did they get the key?

IMO, this wasn't an obviously abandoned house where they broke a window to get in - IMO someone assisted them.

Halley Tejada, 19, and Kensly Alston, 18, were tracked down by US Marshals in York, west of Philadelphia, just before 11 a.m. and taken into custody, the sources said.

She was beaten to death, then stuffed in the duffel bag.
Killers were squatting there for some time until the victim returned from Europe and surprised them. They killed her and took off in her car.

At her funeral held earlier this week, Vitel's son remembered her as someone who was kind and took care of others. Her son said the move to the New York City apartment was a step to relax and take care of herself, according to an article by CBS News.

Two persons of interest in NYC murder captured in York

Halley Tejada and Kensly Alston are accused of murdering Nadia Vitels in Manhattan last week. They were captured in York Friday morning by U.S. Marshals.

After police ran multiple checks on "Veah Rose," the name provided by Alston, and found no information, the officer threatened Alston with arrest for providing a false name. She then allegedly gave the officer her correct information, claiming she was "nervous," according to the complaint.

Alston's mother confirmed her information with police, and the officer did not run the vehicle's license plate number until the following day, which gave Alston and Tejada time to get away, according to authorities in New York.

While the NYPD reported Lower Paxton Township police did not run the vehicle's registration, the Lower Paxton Police Department issued a clarifying statement Friday disputing that report.

"At the time of this minor crash, the vehicle was being operated by a juvenile female, with an adult male passenger," the police department said. "The officer conducted an NCIC inquiry related to the vehicle’s registration number, which came back as a valid registration with no suspicious circumstances.

"It was discovered that there was no current insurance coverage for the vehicle and Lower Paxton Township Bureau of Police had the vehicle towed from the scene. The victim of the homicide was then discovered on the afternoon of March 14.

"At the time of the crash investigation on March 13th, the juvenile female initially gave a false name, and date of birth and provided an address in York. The male passenger did provide his name as Halley Tejada and also gave the officer a date of birth.

If you search for their names you can see images of their mugshots, but when I clicked on the articles the photos disappear. Links were from CBS, NBC, and other sources.
Also, there are conflicting reports of their ages. Alston, a female, is variously listed as 16 years old, 18, or 19.
I downloaded an image purporting to be them directly from Google Images but will not post it at this time, until I'm sure it really is them.
Very strange, the way this is being covered by the media. JMO

so the girl is a juvenile but LE did not even know that originally since she gave them a false name. Is she reported missing from anywhere? And they crashed the car into another innocent person who has a smashed up car and no recovery. of course they killed Ms. V. so no problem creating more mayhem. If they were seen near the apt, people might have thought they were delivering things but the key issue... how did they get that?

A minor point perhaps, but there were also different spellings of the victim's last name in the various media offerings. Was it it Vitel or Vitels?

JMO, but do these journalists even know how to get basic details right?
