Circumstances of Disappearance:
Thomas was last seen while on a hiking trip in the vicinity of Mount Marcy near Keene, New York on April 12, 1976. He and five other hikers set up camp approximately two miles away from the summit. Around 3:00 PM, Thomas left the camp alone to take a walk. He left without any provisions including his backpack, snowshoes, compass, and map. When he failed to return by 10:00 PM, the others went searching for him but he was nowhere to be found. He was reported missing the next day.

Searchers reached the area on the morning of April 14th with the aid of dogs and helicopters. Despite the extensive searches conducted, Thomas was never located. His whereabouts still remain unknown.

Excellent and comprehensive article about Steve's disappearance. It tells a story.

"They had a dog with them "I remember the dog freaked out that night," Sherwood said. "He just kept whining. He wouldn't leave the tent." They got into the lean-to in their sleeping bags and hoped that Steve had found shelter. Nobody slept that well."
