GUILTY NY - Tessa Majors, 18, Barnard College student, fatally stabbed, Manhattan, 11 Dec 2019 *13yo arrest

The three are stated here as being in middle school together so all must be ages 13-maybe 15. Caution - disturbing details.

Z D, 13, told cops that his pal “dropped a knife” as the pair and a third male suspect pounced on the 18-year-old college freshman in Morningside Park on Wednesday evening during a robbery-gone-awry, said NYPD Detective Vincent Signoretti, who helped interview Davis.

“Mr. D picked [the knife] up and handed it back to [his friend], and then Mr. Davis watched his friends grab the victim, put her in a chokehold and remove items from her pocket,” the cop said.

Then Davis “saw the victim get stabbed. He saw feathers come out of her jacket, and them all three of them ran out of they park … and they went home,” Signoretti said.

I think you misread my post but the views on the mayor and/or policing may possibly come into some importance.
What do you think ?

Tessa's family may feel that more security is needed around that campus and not just on it.
I agree with your post; btw.

IMO, I think that bringing in the politics (mayor, etc) just invites polarization. I live in and around NYC and work in very poor, crime ridden areas. I posted earlier that I struggled at Morningside Park because I don't feel safe due to the people who hang in the park, the terrain, and my ability to be seen or heard if I have a problem. I didn't feel safe there for many years, under many administrations.

I worked not far from where the young man was killed with a machete last year (in the Bronx) and there are areas where I encourage the youth in my care to never to go--- that killing was not about policing but rather a huge gang issue in that part of the Bronx. I work with young people and families who have been victims of horrific crime under many administrations-- not just the current or distant past administrations. I am always as cautious as I can be but none of that guarantees that I will never be a victim of a violent crime. In fact, when I was a victim of a violent crime, it was in a very nice neighborhood in a tawny town in CT, not very far from the confines of NYC--- it was just as brutal and took equally long to recover from.

My spouse attended Columbia. My child was on campus walking to 125th station on Wednesday at 6:30 (by the grace of all that is good, they were unharmed). I was on the Barnard and Columbia campuses a lot, especially out of the bubble on the Teacher's College campus. There is a fairly good police presence in and around campus with walking patrols, bike patrols, and squad car patrols. Morningside Park is not part of the campus but there are patrols on Morningside Drive-- remember the Cathedral backside is there as is St.Luke's Roosevelt hospital with doctor parking all along the Morningside Drive, along with the Columbia Buildings with no access to most buildings from Morningside Drive. There are often foot patrols walking along and around the area. Go north a little to the City College neighborhood and the presence is a lot, a lot less. Go even farther north and the presence is non-existent.

Awful things happen. If we look at all of the people missing in "good" areas and "bad" areas, we will see that evil happens despite economics, color, age and gender. I appreciate that WS tries to encourage us to step away from the political because the disappearance and killing of others deserves to be above a right or wrong in political thinking. JMO.

Hopefully they will all be charged as adults.

Im sorry but I must agree with you. My guess is they were as big as she and there was 3 against 1. There was absolutely no need in stabbing this young lady to death. Gang mentality if you ask me.

It may be helpful for people to have a map of the area. Tessa was walking up the stairs at 116th and Morningside Drive. It is a step staircase with no sight lines to Morningside Drive until you are just about at the top. The EAst Campus/Greene (Law) and Faculty house are elevated and not street level access on Morningside or Amsterdam Ave. The arrows indicate ingress and egress from campus.

13-year-old suspect arrested in fatal stabbing of Barnard College student, sources say - ABC News

"...While he is not the killer of Majors, according to a testimony from the arresting officer, he did allegedly pick up the knife and give it to another teen...."

Earlier articles seemed to indicate that it was uncertain how much involvement the 13 year old had.

For LE to arrest him shows that they believe he was with the killer(s) even if he didn't participate in the attack.
He may have only taken some possessions of Tessa's .

The article I'd linked in above post said LE talked to two other juveniles and they were allowed to leave.

I am defending rehabilitation for children who were likely from abusive households, with traumatic short lives and pressure from systematic neglect.

If the perps were 18, 20, 25 I’d be calling for LWOP. But these are children and if they prove they can, they should be looked at for rehabilitation.
snipped for focus

Do you work with at-risk juveniles ?
If so, you might have more experience in this area.

Btw -- I added a caveat in the last sentence.
Don't be offended.
I was asking and nothing else.
So I wasn't accusing and neither was I attacking your character.
I apologize if you really thought that.

Just asking questions; we can also agree to disagree in a civilized manner.
We both have our own opinions formed; and we will have to wait and see how this turns out.
It's not the rehabilitation I'm disagreeing with; it's the severity of this crime.
Can anyone come back from such an action and be trusted ?
A difficult conundrum.

It could turn out to be someone older than the two arrested, unsure about that.

Unless the 13 or 14 year old are pretty large teens-- doesn't it take some strength to stab a person to death ?
I'm thinking she was fighting wildly for her life.
Did two people attack her ?

Not so in the article I posted.

Surveillance footage shows the trio entering the park, but there is not footage of the slaying, the officer said.

NY Mag has this (13-Year-Old Boy Arrested in Murder of Barnard College Student):

According to police, Majors was approached by several suspects just before nightfall Wednesday near 116th Street and Morningside Drive. The New York Daily News spoke to a police source who described surveillance video of the incident:

The college student has a “quick interaction” with the two men on the lower stair landing, then quickly falls to the ground, her cellphone landing by her side, the video shows.

Majors managed to stagger back up the steps to a Columbia security guard booth but the guard was out doing his rounds, sources told the Daily News. When he returned, he found the collapsed teen and called 911.

BBM According to the 13 year old, it sounds like there were 2 and that after one dropped the knife, he handed it back to them as the held her and choked/stabbed her. See the article above a few posts.

Apologies for the graphic description. I hurts my heart just to type it.

Makes sense and I should know there would be conflicting MSM reporting.

I also just read a statement from the university that the guard was not out doing rounds and was actually in the booth when she came up the steps. Who knows what to believe half the time.

^^^^ Good post.
Interesting.
I agree with the bolded .

No, I was only referencing the mayor and LE in that city in regards to the crime itself and nothing else.

That would explain the arrest.
Sounds like LE interviewed other teens and they were allowed to leave.
I think LE are being cautious and that's an encouraging sign.

Plenty of people, including me, and the teens we took in and raised, had absolutely abhorrent childhoods. 13 isn't a child either, imo. So tired of the bad childhood excuse.

Beg your pardon, but I think you may be confusing the original juveniles/teens who were interviewed and released stated as having nothing to do with it. That was shortly after it happened as I recall. I believe the 2 who were with the 13 year old are or soon will be in custody. One is at least - the 14 year old.

If she collapsed on the south side of the guard box, she had to have stumbled past the box. I don't think anyone was there. JMO.
