NORTH ELBA — State Police at Ray Brook are assisting state forest rangers with a missing hiker from Connecticut.

On March 11, Thomas A. Howard of Westport went hiking in on Mt. Colden in the town of North Elba. On March 16, he was reported missing after failing to return from his trip.

Howard is approximately 6-foot-1, 170 pounds, has gray hair, and was last known to be wearing a long red jacket, gray boots and snow shoes. His last known location was at the Marcy Dam lean-to.

State Police and forest rangers are asking anyone who may have seen Howard to contact Troop B at 518-891-2000, or the DEC in Ray Brook at 518-891-0235.

According to the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation, 63-year-old Thomas Howard signed into a trail register at the Adirondack Loj on Friday, March 11, saying his destination was Mount Colden via the Trap Dike.

Ah - was he properly equipped with rock climbing experience?

Because from what I am reading, the Trap Dike is not a casual hiking trail:

Missing in the ADKS! Experienced Hiker Disappeared One Week Ago

Howard started his trek one week ago, but hasn't been seen or heard from since he signed into a trail register at the Adirondack Loj on Friday, March 11.

According to the log, his destination was Mount Colden via the Trap Dike.

The Trap Dike is a 12.90 mile, loop trail near Lake Placid, New York. It's considered a "challenging route," that could take anywhere from 7-13 hours to complete accorrding to AllTrails.com.

Police say Howard began a hiking trip on Friday, March 11, 2022 near Mount Colden in the town of North Elba, New York.

Mount Colden, located within the Adirondack Mountains, is known for its Trap Dike which runs along the middle of the mountain.

He was reported missing to authorities after he failed to return from his trip by March 16, 2022

State Police say Thomas A. Howard, of Westport, Connecticut, was reported missing on Wednesday after failing to return from a hiking trip on Mount Colden. Police say his last known location was at the Marcy Dam lean-to.


Howard’s niece, Jessica Paar, said he’s an experienced hiker. She said the search teams are looking around the Trap Dike trail up Mount Colden.
