If someone falls and hits their head while you're having sex with them, you call 911, you don't stuff them in a suitcase and dump them like yesterday's trash.

Valerie did have a premonition. She knew he was angry and there could be a handful of reasons why. She didn’t want to tell her mom. Why? She knew this guy was coming after her. The idea that she died during sex is absurd. It is sickening to me and all to common of an occurrence. They will sort out the details as it moves along.

You likely wouldn't take their sheets so your DNA wouldn't be found in their apartment either.

Now if you were raping someone and killed them, all the above might be true.

I would imagine he told investigators they were having sex to cover the fact that his DNA would likely be found when her vaginal swab is tested for DNA.

It is horrible to think that her boyfriend seemed “off” to so many and yet she had an earlier one much, much more “off”...

I agree.

On another note, this is so illustrative of the perils of domestic violence and meeting up with predators and the trap of wanting to be "nice". So many women fall into the trap of wanting to be supportive or not be a b**ch and these guys manipulate and take advantage of us (and I include myself in this because I've done it) and not realize that there is true danger here -- OR like in Valerie's case, have a strong intuitive sense of it, obviously, but then ignore our natural self-preservation instincts in our socially ingrained need to be nice and not make waves.

Because it can't be said enough, The Gift of Fear by Gavin DeBecker speaks of this.

Trust your instincts. Say no. Scream. Do what you have to do. Your life may be at stake. And if you were wrong...so what? No harm done.

Dear Kittybunny,

Thank you for your excellent post, especially your mention of Gavin DeBecker's book.

"The Gift of Fear" is critical for everyone to read, especially women.

We have discussed this extremely important book on Websleuths for years and it certainly has its place in most threads. I'm so glad you brought it up.

In the book, Gavin illustrates how our intuition, or gut feeling is an internal warning system which is a survival tool for humans.

I wish this book was mandatory reading in schools. This is such an important book and would be an ideal topic for a family discussion.

and it is kind of hard to claim you are innocent when the person you are visiting calls her mum before hand saying she is in fear of her life. I also agree with previous posts, the bounding of the body would be done if she was still alive.

I noticed back when DNA testing became standard practice, that the usual defense against rape changed from: “never saw that woman, didn’t touch her” to “it was consensual sex.”

Funeral held for New York woman whose body was found in suitcase in Connecticut | Daily Mail Online

An emotional funeral was held Wednesday for Valerie Reyes, the 24-year-old woman whose corpse was found stuffed inside a suitcase dumped on the side of a quiet road in suburban Connecticut.

Dozens of friends and relatives were seen hugging and wiping away tears outside of St Gabriel's Church in New Rochelle, New York.

Many of the attendees wore white sweatshirts bearing a photo of Reyes and the words: 'In Loving Memory of our beautiful soul Valerie. You captured so many hearts'.

'She was just silly and just a free soul, beautiful soul. She's going to be missed,' Reyes' cousin Desiree Rodriguez said as she made her way into the church on Wednesday.

'We're devastated, but we're happy that the person was caught so she gets to go in peace. It kind of brings us a little more peace, too, to let her go.'

After the hour-long memorial service, loved ones held white balloons as a Reyes was buried in a green casket adorned with yellow and white flowers at a cemetery in nearby Rye, New York.

Some people are pointing towards the boyfriend. I just did a quick sweep of his Twitter and read the article: ‘Valerie never went to Manhattan’: Man claiming to be murdered woman’s boyfriend says it was ‘bizarre’ for her to be out of contact with family; denies reports of loud arguments.

He suggests that they never go to Manhattan, it doesnt mean that she wasnt there. I was also wondering why her cousin could post this on 30/01/2019 a day after she went missing and why there is no other mention that I can find about being near or at the hospital: jorge reyes on Twitter

For me, the BF is not the type, yes hard to tell from twitter posts, but if there were no prior hearing from neighbours of arguements it seems more likely that when Valerie explaining her situation, could have been getting frantic and paranoid. I think a women of her aptitude, ie personality type, friendly, working a stable job at a book store, my have had an actual stalker, and for what ever reason felt unsafe at home. It has been known before for people to leave home in a frantic state and not know what to do with themself, She possibly caught the train down town. The CCTV spoken about at the New Rochelle train station, said she only had a small bag on 29/01/2019 when she didnt turn up for work, no extra clothes, or bed sheets. Early hours of Wednesday 2am at an ATM in the city. I believe after calming down she most probably went back home. This is when something posibly happened. 30/01/2019.

So my main question is where the cousin got this information from so quickly? Do police investigate this rigorously the day a person is reported missing? How did he know she was at the hospital?

People sight mental illness, but tell me any 20 something year old today who doesnt suffer depression or anxiety? She seemed smart enough to know when to be genuinely concerned of her safety. Just a shame she didnt reach out more and took it on herself. It a bizarre one. Also to drop her body on the first turn off, and loop road back to New York, in the Connecticut jurisdiction shows a thoughtful process of an intelligent killer, not a crime of passion but something a little more sinister.

[Ps please dont tear me apart, this is my first post on websleuths, I felt something last night about this case and completely drew me in to investigate. be gentle please]

Welcome!

This is such a puzzling and sad case. Like many of you, I too am on the fence as to whether there was one event that led to Valerie's murder that was made to look like something else and elements were staged; or whether there were two (somewhat) unrelated events, the first being that Valerie herself did go missing on her own and went to Manhattan, then the second being that she met with foul play there more or less randomly. The key questions in my mind, are obvious:

1. Was that indeed Valerie on surveillance footage in Manhattan?
2. Where are the missing sheets? If her body was wrapped in them, I don't know that LE would release that detail. Probably can figure that out from the leaked photo/account of how her body was found but I don't use SM to sleuth so not sure.
3. Was that Valerie's suitcase?

I can see it being plausible either way. Valerie takes off, due to her anxiety, thinking she'll be safe in Manhattan; but she meets up with someone with ill intentions. This person is not from the city; maybe they're visiting. They kill her, use their own suitcase, and dump her on the way out of town. They robbed her first, perhaps forcing her to get money from her own ATM. It seems really random, but I suppose it could happen.

BBM Your #2 above.
It's been so long that I've checked in here, but please tell me the pics are NOT on the Internet, are they?:(

Well I had the WRONG EX pegged as her killer. I'm ready to eat crow now because I can't believe it was a different ex boyfriend. I'm going to stay off social media from now on since that was where I decided to go the direction of the new ex boyfriend not the ex boyfriend we are hearing about today being arrested. I feel like utter crap for being so wrong about this case. RIP Valerie I hope justice is served.

I certainly commend your honesty and the need to apologize. You're certainly a rarity! Good for you. :)

Ex-boyfriend of the woman whose body was bound in a suitcase is arrested | Daily Mail Online

Police have arrested the ex-boyfriend of the 24-year-old woman whose murdered body was found stuffed in a suitcase on the side of a quiet Connecticut road, with her hands and feet bound.

Cops arrested Javier de Silva, of Queens, on Tuesday, a week after the grisly murder of Valerie Reyes, 24.

On Tuesday Greenwich Police Capt. Robert Berry released a statement saying a suspect 'believed to be involved' in her death has been arrested.

The suspect was later identified as de Silva, who Berry said also fraudulently used Reyes' ATM card.

Reyes had reportedly dumped her boyfriend de Silva a week before she went missing.

De Silva is a Venezuelan citizen and is reportedly in the country illegally as he overstayed his visa, according to CBS.

The arrest followed the police investigation of multiple crime scenes, reviewing hundreds of hours of surveillance footage, and interviews multiple potential witnesses, the Greenwich Police Department said in a press release on Tuesday.

'New Rochelle Police Detectives accompanied by Greenwich Police Detectives, arrested a suspect in New York who had fraudulently used the ATM card of homicide victim Valerie Reyes.

Thanks, Cybervampira!

I'm waiting to see the MS-13 connection I predicted way early in this case. Albeit I thought it would be girls. I still think this may have something to do with Valerie knowing too much she shouldn't have known or she was a threat to someone in some kind of gang-related way. Then again, maybe she threatened him with ICE if he did not leave her alone.

She was afraid for a friggin' reason! Nothing to do with paranoia, anxiety or depression. It would serve all of us to be wise enough to know when we're in danger. Moreover, it would have been UNNATURAL for Valerie NOT to be anxious and depressed. Sheeeez

Poor sweetheart, Valerie.

She kept her stalker secret to her death most likely to protect those she loved. I'm thinking this is why she may have broken up with the other ExBF...perhaps to protect him from this MONSTER!

"Reyes’ mother, Norma Sanchez, told CBS New York that da Silva was fixated on horror movies, but a lot of people are who don’t end up like he did."
"Da Silva was “really pushy, wouldn’t take no for an answer,” she said. Reyes got frustrated with him, and that’s when the relationship ended."

Lol...I'll be waiting for mine. Sorry, mods!

Valerie Reyes' ex admits dumping her body in a suitcase but denies murder, police say | Daily Mail Online

The first picture has emerged of the man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and stuffing her body into a suitcase as police say he admitted dumping her remains but has denied murder.

Javier Enrique Da Silva Rojas, 24, is accused of murdering Valerie Reyes, also 24, in New Rochelle, New York, before tying her up, stuffing her into a case, then leaving it by the side of a road in Connecticut.

Rojas was arrested Tuesday and police say he told them that Reyes died after falling and hitting her head while the pair were having sex.

An image taken from his Instagram account shows the pair side by side in a CVS pharmacy almost exactly a year ago.

However, I gotta be careful - open tabs = my computer overheating... again.

Looks like it's time to kill the viruses but also you may have to shut 'er down, remove the case, then carefully...CAREFULLY rid it of dust bunnies, esp. the fan and openings. ;)

Thanks all for the articles & updates & discussion!

Yeah, I don't believe she fell & hit her head either - why bind her up??

So no further court dates available? I see @cybervampira here - eh?

 what's this and how do I get one? I'm not a techie here. :D

Too funny that you even had to post that, right?

Edited typo from INacted to OUTacted, I mean enacted. :p
