Hi all,
I’m hoping for help with an unsolved murder that has haunted my family since the summer of 1992.
My mother was twenty-five and 8mo pregnant with my sister when she learned that her cousin was viciously murdered in Babylon, NY. She has memories of a bright, kind, and quiet girl with big dreams.
Around 11pm, Yvonne told her mother that she was leaving (on foot) to meet up with a friend.
She never came home.
I found the following post from an old Websleuths thread (potential LISK victim list) but do not know the source of information:
“July 18, 1992 IVONNE RIVERA, vanished from TJ's, once a popular bar in the waterfront village of Babylon, 23-year-old statistics major left the bar alone about 2:30 a.m. , planning to walk home. Her battered, naked body was discovered by a man walking his dog in a grassy area near the Babylon grade school. The cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma. Police never recovered her clothes, and declined then, and now, to say whether she had been sexually assaulted”.
My family is strong, but was never the same. For myself, I feel a connection when I look into the eyes of my mother, my aunts, or my grandmother who speak little of Yvonne.
I listen to Sword & Scale and My Favorite Murder. Quite different podcasts but I appreciate the story telling and the time that it helps to pass. A lot of their stories have an ending and I think about all of those who do not. I wonder if Yvonne’s murder(ers) are still at large. Do they have a family? Do they rest at night? Did they hurt anybody else?
I’m not sure what will come of this post and just pray for all victims and families (known and unknown) that suffer at the hands of violence.
If anybody knows where I could learn more about Yvonne’s case and potentially solve this, please let me know.
Best.
