GUILTY NZ - Sean McKinnon, Australian tourist, shot dead, campervan robbery, North Islands Raglan, Aug 2019

Det Supt Ailsa Kent told a press conference: "A post-mortem was carried out on Andrew's body and the cause of death has been recorded as multiple injuries.

"[That] is consistent with our current belief that Andrew was caught between a vehicle and the road and then dragged for a distance."

Police are still working to find the gun that was used to murder an Australian tourist near Raglan on New Zealand’s North Island.

Sean McKinnon’s body was found in his rented campervan at Gordonton, north of Hamilton, at 8am on Friday, sparking a homicide investigation.

Buckley escaped and ran 2km in bare feet on a bush road to raise the alarm.

A 23-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested and charged with murder and a number of other offences including aggravated robbery and making threats to kill.

Detective Inspector Graham Pitkethley said this morning that finding the murder weapon was a top priority.

“The firearm used in the shooting has not yet been recovered, and locating it remains a priority for police,” he said.

“Officers have also been conducting reassurance patrols in the Raglan and Gordonton areas to ensure the public is safe and feels safe.”

The alleged killer has been remanded in custody after facing Hamilton District Court on Saturday.

On Sunday Detective Inspector Graham Pitkethley said police were looking to speak to anyone who had seen hitchhikers near where the campervan was found on Friday.

"As part of our ongoing inquiries, police are looking for anyone who may have seen any hitchhikers in the Gordonton-Whitikahu area during daylight hours on Friday," he said in a statement.

While police have arrested and charged a man with McKinnon's murder, Pitkethley said they were still piecing together what allegedly happened but as part of that were keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a man hitchhiking in the Gordonton-Whitikahu area on Friday.

In particular, he was interested to hear from motorists who may have caught footage of the hitchhiker on their dashcam.

"As part of our ongoing inquiries, police are looking for anyone who may have seen any hitchhikers in the Gordonton–Whitikahu area during daylight hours on Friday," Pitkethley said.

Particularly, if any motorists that travelled this route on Friday have dashcam footage, police would like to hear from you."

Several people commented on social media about seeing a man acting suspiciously in the area on Friday afternoon.

The house Bianca Buckley came to for help, was not the first she ran past on that dark gravel mountain trail, but it was the most visible from the roadside.

The couple who live there heard her cry for help. They took her in and sat with her for about one hour until the police arrived.

"We just heard her calling out," said the man, who does not want to be named. "I popped my head out the window and asked her what was going on," he said. "Obviously it was that her partner's been shot, the van's been stolen, stuck in the middle of nowhere, 'Can you help me?'"

"She ran down the road in bare feet — 6 kilometres, hid in bushes because she heard creaks and thought they were car noises of the guy coming back to try and get her".

"In the light of the situation — yeah of such a heinous act, she was brave, man, real brave."

The couple only moved in a few weeks ago expecting to live a quiet life by the sea.

The man accused of murdering Australian Sean McKinnon appeared to have two Facebook profiles, with one saying “🤬🤬🤬🤬 the world” as its intro.

A friend of the alleged killer took to social media on Sunday, posting a public photo of him and the man standing side by side. “I witnessed your struggle brother ...,” he wrote.

The accused has been charged with murder, aggravated robbery, threatening to kill and driving disqualified. He is due to face another hearing on August 27.

The father of the accused gunman has spoken out.

The Cairns man, who cannot be identified, made a brief statement in the wake of allegations surrounding his son who has been charged with murder.

"It is a pretty difficult time," the man, originally from Rockhampton but now living in Cairns, said. "My thoughts are with the family [of Mr McKinnon]; I won't be making any further comments at this time."

The Cairns man is known for charity work, having helped with fundraisers for cancer.

The alleged shooter had cryptically posted on his father's Facebook page on July 7, "A father can't choose when to be in there sons life when you don't have the wright to say your opinion on rumours you have heard you were the gutless one who left (sic)."

Raglan shooting: Gun mystery as homicide investigation continues

'The accused will make his second court appearance on September 17 via audio-visual link, when it's expected he'll enter pleas.'

A search for the gun used continued last week, with police appealing for any sightings of hitchhikers in the Gordonton or Whitikahu area.

But 10 days after the homicide investigation was launched, police won't confirm whether those searches had been fruitful.

"As the matter is before the courts we are unable to comment further," a police spokesperson said in a statement.

( sort of makes the RCMP look positively blabber-mouthy.. )

'A 23-year-old man who allegedly shot an Australian tourist in a campervan near Raglan has had an appearance in court postponed for three weeks.

The defendant, who has ongoing name suppression, was meant to be appearing in the High Court in Hamilton on Tuesday morning. ( That's today , NZ time. )

However, by agreement between Crown and defence counsel, that appearance has been adjourned until September 17, and it is expected the accused man will enter pleas on that date to charges of murder, causing grievous bodily harm during an unlawful act - namely aggravated robbery, threatening to kill, and driving while disqualified. Trooper, do you know a news article that mention how the guy arrived at the camper van location? It seems quite remote and the encounter was very early morning.

Kubi...no , I don't , and it is something I am curious about also. Obviously, it is hard to believe he walked out to the killing site. Maybe he left his vehicle there, and this was one way of ascertaining who he was, where he might go to.

Yet, he had the mental acuity to get himself there, by whatever means, choose a particular van and target, took his own weaponry and ammo, ( you'd have to say a reasonable amount of premeditation there ) and then had enough smarts to get this strangers van back down and into Gordontoun. And then, to successfully hide himself for some hours.

But now, apparently, he is too mentally debilitated to even make a plea.

I suspect that it hasn't been made public how he arrived there because someone else , inadvertently, one hopes, took him there, and that name is suppressed also.

The NZers know how to do this kind of stuff, though.. The NZ police are no strangers to peculiar events, and it's a matter of patience while it wends its way slowly, but very surely, through the NZ legal system.

Keep tuned!... a provisional date for a court trial has already been penciled in, ( I think Nov 20 ) so it's a matter of getting this person up to speed, perhaps medically, and/ or therapeutically, enough to enable them to make a plea one way or the other that satisfies a NZ Judge.

Also, the shooter has to be able to make coherent instructions to his (legally appointed ) barrister, as well. This could delay things somewhat.

He might have hitchhiked to the location, thus why the police are looking for dash cam footage?

Looking at the charges already laid, one is for disqualified driving, he either never had a license to drive, or it has been suspended in the past, and , one would think, that would be the end of one's driving, but I should have known better, plenty of suspended drivers see driving as a right and simply carry on drivin'. Certainly, he did, with the van of Sean's. .. absence of license seemed to be no handicap. He could have stolen a car to get out there.

If he used a handgun , which, I honestly doubt, that would be a rare thing in NZ, he must have been carrying a rifle of some sort, not what any hitchhiker expecting a lift would be toting.. …

NZ police will unravel it. Just an awful thing, and I suspect he will turn out to be a nuisance neighbor, a troublesome member of the community in many ways, subtle and overt, for a long time ( he is 23, well inside the criteria for young white male unfocused rage ), a bloke who people would avoid sitting next to in a bus shelter.

Trial date for man accused of shooting Australian tourist Sean McKinnon

Some tidying up to do.

Next appearance on Oct 29, for a mention and some sort of progress report, I imagine, re mental capacity.

Trial date is penciled in for Nov 16th. Not 20th, sorry. …

( "next appearance " doesn't mean he will appear.. he may be unable to appear, he may be heavily under medication, it may be unsafe, and it would be done by TV from his remand centre, or he may rock up, sparkly and ready for the fray, so to speak. )…

Well......I dont know what has happened to his appearance in court today,as there is no mention of it. NZ is three hours ahead of me, so it must be about 6pm.-ish... might be something tomorrow..

OR... it's just goin direct to trial on Nov 16th.....

OR he is considered too mad to make a plea or instruct his solicitor/barrister, and it's going straight past trial and stopping at sentencing...

Sept 17, 2019

The defendant, who has ongoing name suppression, had his case called in the High Court however he made no appearance himself.

As the court was told, a psychological assessment had found him not to be currently in a fit state to plead or instruct his counsel.

He is facing charges of murder, causing grievous bodily harm during an unlawful act - namely aggravated robbery, threatening to kill, and driving while disqualified.

The trial is scheduled to start on November 16, 2020 and is tentatively set down for 3 weeks.

Wellington: The 23-year-old man charged with killing holidaying Victorian surfer Sean McKinnon has pleaded not guilty to murder in New Zealand's High Court in Hamilton on Tuesday.

A trial will take place in November 2020 after the accused, who has been granted name suppression, finally proved fit to enter a plea.

He will face one count of murder, threatening to kill, robbery causing grievous bodily harm and driving while disqualified.

Previous hearings had been postponed owing to mental health concerns.

He has been remanded since then, and is due to appear in court in March for a callover hearing, when the suppression order will be reviewed once more.

The High Court has set aside three weeks for the trial, due to begin November 16, 2020

This plea of not guilty is , somewhat, par for the course, it is likely to change as the trial date gets closer, if, as I assume, he is on some sort of Legal Aid program.

Also... I don't know how long this name suppression thingy can hold out, sometime his name has to become public , crime is a public matter, …
