I'll assume that most of the locals also know what C.A.R.Y. represents. For those that don't Cary is the Containment Area for Relocated Yankess. Cary was a small town at one time. In 2000 is about when Cary began to explode with - well the Yankees invading.
ETA - because of the location and easy commute to RTP area, Cary became the perfect spot for building new homes and raising families. It is NOT all "yankees" that have decided to make a home in Cary. Just a little joke from years ago....

I'm not much of a country music girl but I do love my Nashville Predators, I can two-step with the best of them at the Wildhorse Saloon (think Gilley's in Urban Cowboy) and I'll even take you down the road to Lynchburg for a grand tour of the Jack Daniels distillery. Woot!
Seems to me that when IBM opened a facility here a long time ago (maybe in the 70s or 80s?) that started quite a movement of people from up north, specifically from NY state.
As a born and bred Southerner, sometimes I miss our old ways, the politeness and genteelity (is that a word?) of southern culture. But, frankly, it has been good for the South to have a mix of cultures come here. It has made us much better and certainly one of the best places to live.
I have learned a lot from my Northern neighbors. Not only that, I learned a lot from my immediate neighbors from Canada, Russia, Argentina, South Africa, and Spain!
What a world...........!!!!!!!!!!!
I suppose I estimated 2000 for the big growth because that's when I got out of Cary because it was getting too crowded to suit me. I moved further to the country and now I'm getting taken over again!! LOL I worked off of Maynard Rd from 1990 to 2000. That was enough for me. The growth and change was just too much! I'm born and bred right here in NC too. I do love the diversity and the cultural lessons I've learned from all the different peoples moving to the area.
Like what?
ohhh Well I've learned from my neighbors who are Mexican that the 15th birthday of a young lady is the most important day of her life besides her wedding day. The parties for 15 year olds can cost as much as 20 thousand american dollars if the family can afford it, often to the point of selling belongings in order to pay for the party.
Everything tastes better with chorizo. ;-) (my personal favorite) ETA - there are several different types of chorizo and all of them do NOT contain saliva glands from pigs THANK GOD!!!!!
The average vietnamese only ate meat about once a week in their native country. Chicken is a delicacy for them. One of the hardest adjustments for them to make coming to this country is the abundance of food and the WASTE of food. In vietnamese my name means GOLD.
Honduran men and mexican men do not like each other. Each thinks the other is "beneath" them.
The Spanish language is spoken very differenlt depending on where in Mexico or other Latin American countries you were raised.
I've learned to speak Spanish though I'm not very good at it yet.
Well keep working hard and you might learn
some Chinese while you're at it.
Ha I don't think I can do it. Spanish is not too bad - it is a much simpler language than English for sure. I work with a lot of Latin American people in my job so I try to learn a new word or phrase everyday. It makes communicating with them more fun and easier..
