After more than five years with no answers, the case got the attention of Cleveland Missing and Newburgh Heights Police Chief John Majoy.
“They weren’t getting anywhere and they were demanding proof of life. Like, why wasn’t somebody helping them?,” questioned Chief Majoy.
What happened next jump started a full blown investigation, including interviews and searches.
In just over a year, agents with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations pieced together what the sheriff had not.
They arrested Amanda’s boyfriend, Fred Reer.
Authorities say he killed her, dismembered her, and burned her remains behind the cabin where they lived — dumping what was left in a creek.
With no body recovered, Reer pleaded guilty to lesser charges and was sentenced to 14 years in prison.
“Fourteen years was not enough, especially with the things he did,” said Amanda’s son Josh.
Amanda’s family feels cheated. They’ve filed a lawsuit against Huron County Sheriff Todd Corbin, accusing him of failing to investigate.
But now, another question is surfacing: Was Amanda Reer’s only victim — or could there be others, including in Florida?
“Fred can look over his shoulder and wonder when the state of Florida is going to come knocking at his door,” says Det. Ron Chalmers with the Pinnelas County Sheriff’s Office
