OH OH - ANTHONY SOWELL, 11 bodies unearthed at his Cleveland home, 2007-09 *dies in prison 2021*

oops, that was the network's fault.

The whole thing makes me glad I am not living in Cleveland. I mean not only the stench in the neighborhood that no one investigates. The fact that LE and the life squad was in the home a month ago, yet it doesn't appear that anyone decided to investigate the odor. That it took a month for LE to decide to pick an accused rapist up. But all those missing women in the neighborhood, and there isn't any indication that LE bothered to talk with a known sex offender in the neighborhood!

I thought that when there was a pattern of rapes and/or missing or murdered women in a neighborhood, that LE would check out the wherebouts of known sex offenders? They do that in other areas. IF they had done so, then the odor in the home might maybe have made sense to them, might have even been determined to be probable cause for a search warrant, at an earlier date.

I have a sick feeling necrophilia may come into this

I think that is possible. But what I am afraid of is worse. The stepmom hasn't been seen in over a year, so he wouldn't have to worry about his victims being heard. And he has been posting on fetish sites. So I worry over how long he held the women and how much torture they were put through before they died. A day, a week or a month?

So very sad. People care about these women, even if LE didn't/doesn't, I care about these women and their families and it's not even my job to do so. They have families that love them and it makes me so sad that they were the only ones really searching, all along. There's minimal missing persons information available on most of the women that are missing from that area. He's a KNOWN VIOLENT SEX OFFENDER and it takes them over 4 weeks to even assign an officer to the case to obtain a search warrant for the offense on 9/22?????? Are they actually serious, right now??

It's same old same old. It's a poor neighborhood and the women missing from the are would not get as much attention as women missing from a rich neighborhood.

Neighbor Says Police Knew About Rapist’s House

The police in Cleveland were notified repeatedly about violence in the house of a convicted rapist where the decomposed bodies of six women were found last week, a neighbor said Monday.

Cleveland: Mass murder suspect was model ex-con

Doing a random verification check, a Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Deputy knocked on the suspect's door last month and talked with Sowell. The deputy said he did not smell anything unusual from the front porch of the home.

DeChant said, "All our deputy is allowed to do is go up and knock on the door. If the offender answers the door, or whoever and says 'yes, the sex offender does live here, does sleep here or reside here,' then that's all we are allowed to do by law

Details on the first known rape:

Sowell's violent past offers glimpse of accused rapist suspected of mass murder

With a necktie wrapped around her wrists, the first woman to accuse Anthony Sowell of rape climbed through a third-floor window to a rooftop in East Cleveland to get away from him.

The woman, three-months pregnant, yelled until neighbors spotted her on that July 1989 morning. Sowell was convicted a year later. The crime was so vicious that state parole officials refused to release Sowell early from of a 15-year prison sentence.

This is so sad. I hope all of these women come home to their families. It's sad if these are the women found in the Sowell home, but at the same time it will bring closure to the families. They're in my thoughts and prayers.

Bumped to update.

Great article, Myst.
What is up with this guy? He's seemingly squeaky clean until mid to late 80s. Did he just become more careless or did something trigger this psychopathic behavior around that time? This is so bizarre.

I'm with you, it's horrible to think of the horrors he might have put these poor women through before they died. Sickening.

LOL, you asked the question you know I will have to guess. My guess is that he was a timid man and afraid of most people. Probably too afraid to approach women. Until he got onto drugs. Drugs aided a fantasy life where he had some power with women, the fantasies grew stronger to where he had control of women. Drugs/drinking bolstered his ego enough that he could interact with women and act out the fantasies. In 89 he would have been 30 years old. By that time he may have given up on ever being able to connect with a woman, enough to have a wife or a regular woman in his life.

I do question where his bio mother was in his life. There is mention of a sister, a father who died several years ago and a stepmother. But I am not hearing about a mother. So it is possible that his experiences with the mother or the lack of a mother may have had some impact too.

He was in the marines. Somehow I don't think "timid man and afraid of most people" fits here. My guess is when he was in the marines structured lifestyle kept him out of trouble for while.

Anthony Sowell and Phillip Garrido Cases Raise Questions About Sex Offender Monitoring
Sowell Was Last Visited By Police About One Month Ago

"The system is broken in the sense that we have a lot of people on sex registries and while it gives us a list of people who might be involved in crimes, there are so many people on those lists that they're overly inclusive," said Jonathan Simon, the associate dean for Jurisprudence and Social Policy at UC Berkeley's School of Law. "[These lists] don't give authorities the chance to select those who are the higher risks," said Simon.

EXACTLY!! While it's gross and should be punishable by law, people who urinate in a public place should not be required to register as a sex offender. An 18 year old boy having consentual sex with his 15-16 y.o. girlfriend and her parents overreact does not belong on the registry. Yet, these "offenders" remain registered, cluttering up what could be a useful system. If these types of offenders have to register, then we need a more detailed description of the offense on each offender's registry. Otherwise, we're just left wondering and assuming what they did to have to register for and it's not our job as citizens to ask a possibly dangerous offender what they're in the registry for exactly. They don't give enough details about the person we are looking at as a possible danger and their offense. It should be CLEAR what an offenders crime is. I mean, you get the general idea from the registry, but it doesn't give details about the crime, only what they were charged with. A lot of people may not understand the legal terms that describe the offense. I'm not saying this is the only problem with the way sex offenders are handled, but it's a major one, for sure.
