that NY times article linked above is very frightening and also made me very angry!! ahh, "inner city" - screw em, seems to be the attitude of the PD. i really don't understand why he couldn't have been immediately arrested in the Sept. incident. can you imagine, getting raped inside of persons home, escaping and going to the police saying this person did it and nothing being done for over a month?!! it just blows me away. regarding sowell, it really seems that he had reached a frenzy....i feel so sorry for the women that encountered him, they no doubt died a horrible death...

BBM

This is exactly the case. Most of these women were probably drug addicted, so why put forth the effort to find them? It really stinks what goes on in the innercity, but if you are from the area, you know what a joke the police can be. Now they'll scramble to do a good job because of the national attention.

why 5 murder charges with 6 confirmed bodies?

  • #186
oh wow, this is just awful! Is the presser over, did they say anything else?

  • #187
why 5 murder charges with 6 confirmed bodies?

The body may be too decomposed to determine cause of death. Just because he was not charged with the 6th body as a homicide, does not mean that they cannot add an additional charge of murder. They need to get an identity of everyone, but the 6th one who is undetermined--that one and the circumstances surrounding her disappearance will all be used in determining whether or not to also charge him with that murder.

I think it is highly likely that they are going to charge him with each and every death as a murder.

why 5 murder charges with 6 confirmed bodies?

I think it is because the cause of death for five out of the six initial bodies was determined to be strangulation. The cause of death for the sixth one could not be determined due to decomposition.

just watching my local news... they have brought the count to 10 bodies!!!! this is terrible. Will keep you updated. I live 45 minutes from Cleveland.

  • #190
what I also don't understand is that if people were smelling decomp, why did they not call to complain about the smell? awful.

Hey Nore,
I did too! And found this video http://www.oprah.com/media/20091007-tows-missing-cleveland however, the only one he could be good for would be Ashley Summers as the other two happened while he was in prison. I also don't believe he drove... so not even sure about Ashley but you never know

OT, I grew up and lived in Wooster until marying an army boy! Cleveland was my "big town"... this is very disturbing to me... even more so from knowing the area...

Hi nursebeme,I just wrote a long reply and lost it!! I grew up on the West Side near Metro Hospital ( City)..I just watched the news conference,he's been charged with multiple offenses. He doesnt have a car. They have ten bodies now but Chief said when they do DNA tests (they are collecting from families of missing) there could well be more than one body in a grave. They found a skull wrapped in paper in a bucket in the basement.hope its not another J. Dahmer! We should notify B. they are using cadaver dogs (with hits) and DNA testing. He goes to a sex website! fire Dept. will rip out walls tomorrow.I pray for the people in the neighborhood.God be with them.
Tell your husband I say Thank You!!!

I can't believe this guy got away with killing so many women (assuming they are all women) for so long. So sad.

Mayor:
~no bodies are IDd yet. He recognizes the anxiety of families waiting and says they will be the first to know

~closure as quickly as possible..yet maintaining professional investigation

LE
~ This am they went back to the scene. (it has been secured since they first found the first bodies) and found four more bodies buried in the backyard and 1 skull wrapped in paper or some type of bag in a bucket in the basement

~suspect has been charged with five counts of murder; as well as charges of rape, kidnapping, and felonious aslt for the victim that brought them to the home to begin with

~they have searched vacant buildings and sheds in a 1/4 mile radius around the home (no results.)

~tomorrow they will expand that search of vacant buildings another 1/4 mile

~as to previous addresses of this perp: he has been at this location since his release from prison in 2005. As to any other whereabouts before his incarceration...: as they develop intel they will expand their investigation into those locations

~he had no transportation. He took the bus.

~he has lawyered up and is not talking

~as to how they found the additional bodies: they had cadaver dogs out in the yard today.. .due to the winds the dogs did not hit on anything so they started to backhoe up the property and that is when the four additional bodies were discovered. the dig continues. they are not done yet.

~as to the skull in the basement... reporters asked if there were any other decapitated bodies or if any of the body parts already found were separated. He said "no" but than said that is a Dr. Miller (ME) question.

~clarification of the body count:
-six female bodies found, five of whom were strangled
-four additional bodies today and one skull
(there was no clarification as to if one of the bodies was missing a skull, etc so in my mind this puts the count at 11)

~when asked if he thought there would be any more bodies LE said he didn't know and they would dig thru the night.

~tomorrow the fire department will assist them with searching the walls and ceilings

~LE stresses that it is important to know how the victims, "lived their lives" and LE believes on some there may not have been a missing person report filed

~when asked if they dropped the ball on the smell complaints LE stated that in the last three years they have only been called to this address twice and once was in 2007 for a domestic violence complaint (there was no elaboration). There was never a call to LE on the "smell", etc

~when released in 2005 the perp was listed as a sexual predator and the sheriff/parole was assigned to him. Their last visit to him was on 22 Sept to verify his whereabouts. When asked if he was passing the buck LE said he did not have any info as to if they noted a smell, etc... and basically had never had any calls in reference to him from this agency and denied passing the buck.

~20 october call: there was an EMS/FD call placed to the home about a naked woman falling from the roof of this home and perp in the woman naked. FD responded in five minutes and loaded both of them on "the wagon" and took them to the hospital. Due to FD being uneasy about the situation they called LE who met them at the ER.(way to go FD! you just may have been the linchpin!).. When LE arrived the victim was in xray. She claimed that she was partying with suspect drinking and doing drugs and dropped her keys and fell off the roof trying to get them. Hospital staff told LE the "boyfriend" was in the lobby.. and they proceeded to interview him and got the same story. This incident was initially left as an "accidental injury". Hospital staff was also questioned. (note: not sure when this victim told LE what had really happened to her)

~detectives are crossing referencing missing person reports from all over the city

~identification: this is most important and once done will contact relatives first. Dr. Miller has to do DNA to identify and than also have DNA to compare to. They have some DNA from the neighborhood. Dr. Miller, once he/she Ids victims will be the one to notify families.

~when reporter asked why three days went by for the yard search/house search LE stressed that the scene was secure from the start (F, Sat, Sun). He said the additional searhing and digging didn't take place right away because they were working overtime on the bodies they HAD found, and there are only so many hours that personel can work. He also said they were trying to talk to the suspect

The neighbors say he stunk so bad they did not get near him and his house stunk so bad they did not walk by it.

And none of the police or fire department noticed the smell of death?

would be interesting to find out if the 2007 DV call was placed by the woman who is now in the nursing home.

I know, right?!

I feel sorry for the poor sausage people! Every time I think of the sausage place I get shades of Robert pickton [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Pickton[/ame]

Let us hope and pray he didn't get creative in his disposal!

Also, thinking of the Somer Thompson case... and how hard (if not impossible) it would have been to find her if they had even waited a DAY you have to wonder if while out on his bus trips he wasn't making use of dumpsters around the city!

How will they EVER be able to completely figure out the true breadth of this man's destruction of human life!

thanks for the re-cap nurse!!

ok, so maybe i was a little premature in judging the PD if the victim from Sept. lied about what happened at first. if that is the case, then it looks like LE did a good job by sticking with the investigation. this is all just so crazy to me, how in the he&& are you able to have this many bodies in your house and no one know! i can't believe that we are up to ten bodies!

I can't believe he hadn't been caught before this.
