CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The family of a sixth woman whose body was found in the Imperial Avenue home of suspected serial killer Anthony Sowell sued the City of Cleveland this week, blaming the death of their loved one on police negligence and recklessness.

The suit was filed by attorney David Malik in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court on behalf of the family of Kim Yvette Smith. It is the fourth filed so far against the city or Sowell himself since the remains of 11 women were discovered last year in and around the house in Cleveland's Mount Pleasant neighborhood.

Suspected serial killer Anthony Sowell's school records lost in East Cleveland district's disorganized archives

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Lawyers for suspected serial killer Anthony Sowell have yet another challenge to overcome in defending their client -- tracking down his school records among hundreds of waterlogged and disorganized boxes found under a stage in an East Cleveland middle school.
Sowell, 51, is charged with multiple counts of aggravated murder, kidnapping, abusing a human corpse and tampering with evidence. His trial is scheduled for Feb. 14. He could be sentenced to death, if convicted.

His lawyers asked Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Dick Ambrose to compel the East Cleveland school district to turn over subpoenaed records pertaining to Sowell, who attended schools in the district until 1977.

They want the records to help put together a case for why his life should be spared if he is convicted. They are looking for factors in his schooling and upbringing that shaped who he would become.
