OH OH - Bertha Marie Tidd Newell, 40, Zanesville, 13 July 1948

I agree that this is now pointing to the Bertha that is featured in these articles. As well, I think it can be determined that she simply walked away, due to untreated mental illness. The only way we can try and get a resolution is through loads of documents.
Does anyone have a working email address for Dorothy Daughterly?

While the Bertha Haeft info is circumstantial, I did another search for Bertha, and found that she is listed amongst records as both Marie B Tidd and Marie Tidd and married to Ernest Newell (as a previous poster submitted :). I am going to keep working these angles, and if we can eliminate Bertha Haeft as Bertha Tidd Newell with hard evidence, then I think we should do so with uploaded documents to this thread etc,.

I believe her granddaughter has ruled this out as a match. I know that she was looking into it but it lead to nothing.
Did you get confirmation at all on this? If so, it will help narrow the path in searching for Bertha. Respect to you.

Not as of right now. Last I heard (which has been a while) a haeft family memeber was in contact with the family.
I know Dorothy has not been in the best of health in the past, but I will reach out again.

According to Charley Project:
"After Newell's disappearance, numerous rumors circulated about what might have happened to her. She was said to have joined a traveling circus with a man named Dick Tidd, been murdered by her husband, or admitted to a nursing home in Woodsfield, Ohio. None of these rumors have been substantiated"
I don't know if Tidd was a common surname, but... could this be a misunderstanding? Was Dick Tidd related to her in any way?

There are so many theories about what happened to her... I think they are probable but in my opinion I think only two are plausible... that her husband killed her or that she ran away with that man called Tidd...
whatever the case
may she rest in peace

There is quite a bit about the newells in the zanesville time-signal
Doe Network has her missing at age 40 in 1948, but these news articles list her as 49 in 1945 and 1948. That's a pretty big discrepancy, imo. jmo

The article written in 1956 which gives her age as 49 would have been her age at the time the article was written, not when she would have gone missing. Bertha's date of birth (September 26, 1907) came from ancestry.com

The hospital Bertha may have stayed at is the Orient\Ohio State. Her daughter, Geveva, was an inpatient there when she died in 1956. She also had a son who was sent there in 1947 but I don't believe his stay was very long.

She was also reported missing in November of 1943 and in may of 1944 before her eventual disappearance in 1948. (she attached)
It sounds like there's a strong possibility the mental illness was inherited.
Given the treatments for mental illness in that era, possibly Bertha's husband mentioned her needing another hospital stay or another treatment and she'd had enough...

Sounds like both Bertha and her son were against being "institutionalized". I wonder whether she was trying to protect her son or just didn't care for the police. We're not told whether he'd broken the law before. If this was his first offense, the law certainly took it seriously. jmo

I would be very surprised if a 40 year old woman, with a body that had borne 10 kids, would be of any interest whatsoever to a white slavery ring, even if they existed. And I'm not convinced of that.
I can believe such a ring existed (it was more prevalent than people think), but I agree, in this case it's unlikely that's what happened. jmo

I do believe at the time of her disappearance it was not taken seriously due to her being reported missing before. She had been in trouble for holding the police at bay with a gun while her son escaped a few years before.

I agree. I feel the local LE avoided investigating.
She does resemble the Morgan County Jane doe and did have ties to West Virginia at that time. Its a thought....
Has anyone ever made a connection between her WV roots and the Tidd fellow she allegedly left with? I do believe he may have been a relative.
