"More than a decade has passed since Peter Romans escaped the fire that destroyed his rural Madison County home and killed his wife and their two children. And now, 11 years later, he is charged with killing them.

A specially called Madison County grand jury met for several days last week and indicted Romans, 59, on four counts of aggravated murder, three counts of murder and four counts of aggravated arson. The indictment was unsealed Monday.

Investigators say he intentionally set the fire that killed his wife of 24 years, Billi; their son, Caleb, a 12-year-old athlete at Grove City Christian School; and their 16-year-old daughter, Ami, who loved her steady boyfriend and her 4-H horse named Buster."

Attorney: Father charged with killing family in 2008 house fire is grieving, innocent (with clip)

08/28/19

"A man accused of killing his wife and two children in a house fire was back before a judge Wednesday....

Wednesday his attorney stood firm that Romans is innocent.

"This is a guy that spent the last 11 years of his life grieving and despairing and trying to move forward among the most difficult circumstances imaginable," said Sam Shamansky. "Losing his whole family in this tragedy is beyond comprehensible. He's done his level best to address the charges by pleading not guilty because he's most certainly not guilty."

Romans is being held on $4 million bond. His trial is tentatively set for next spring...."

Opening arguments have been made in the murder trial of a man charged with killing his wife and two children in an arson fire at their Ohio home in 2008.

Peter Romans, 60, of London, has pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated murder, murder and aggravated arson. He opted to have a three-judge panel hear his case, rather than a jury, and he could face the death penalty if convicted.

Prosecutors maintain Romans set the fire that killed his wife, their 12-year-old son and 16-year-old daughter. Romans has maintained his innocence, saying the fire was caused by a faulty part on his 2001 Ford Expedition SUV, which was parked next to the house. The part was under recall at the time.
