Search for missing Newark man moves to river recovery

COSHOCTON – The search for a Newark man who went missing March 22 in Coshocton County is moving from a rescue mission to one of recovery.

(...)

His son, Rian Metelko, in a Facebook post thanked the public for their love and support during the trying time.

“There comes a time in every search and rescue when it must become a recovery effort. The reality is that time has come in this search for my father,” Rian wrote in the post. “As more and more information regarding the tragic events of March 22 has come to light, it has become clear to my family and law enforcement that my father's last location was the Tuscarawas River. Which is currently overflowing from its banks and flowing at an incredible rate.”

Search for missing Newark man moves to river recovery

How sad…

The Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office has been working with other law enforcement agencies, including the Licking County Sheriff’s Office and Newark Police Department, since Metelko went missing. Search efforts have included K-9 units, drones, boats on the river with sonar and search parties on the ground. Golden Hearts A Voice 4 the Voiceless has also assisted with volunteer searching.

Monday morning Lt. J.D. Hardway of the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office said he did not believe they would have crews on the river today, but the case was continuing. He said it’s a good chance Metelko is in the river.

My heart breaks for his family. I can’t imagine knowing your loved one is (most likely) not only deceased but in a body of water where they just can’t find them. Crushingly sad.

ETA: I just realized the last few days on WS our only consolations have been that victims are being found so their families can grieve properly. That’s so tragic.
