This is the first time I ever heard of people OD'ing from Fentanyl that is not their choice.

It's been used in a few murder cases!!

I'm not sure he would have a valid defense as it has been determined that many of those patients weren't terminal and would've gotten better and discharged in a few days.

It's not a valid defense either way.

The pharmacists and nurses (48 total) involved in these cases were reported to their associated state boards. Sadly, the article mentions one of the nurses is Husels wife...yikes!

I really want to think this is some sort of mistake or misunderstanding. Possibly when entering the order? Pharmacy should’ve caught that and called the unit. If it made it past that stop then the RN should’ve questioned the order. Under absolutely NO circumstances would I administer Fentanyl 2,000 mcg regardless of venilatory support!! Even in circumstances when withdrawing care, I’ve never heard of anything close in the ICU. It’s more of a cocktail: Morphine and Ativan in a drip or something similar. Surely there is more to this.

It’s just awful for someone to throw away their career like this and so early on. He finished his residency in 2015 and then began practicing as a physician in the ICU. Apparently he was also an anesthesiologist. I wonder if any of the cases are related to anesthesia?

MOO....there is always the possibility he became impaired
25 nurses cited over high doses for patients who died

Didn’t know there was a whistleblower involved early on either
Dr. William Husel did not meet requirements to work at Mount Carmel, whistleblower says: William Husel, DO, the physician accused of ordering potentially fatal painkiller doses for at least 34 near-death patients, did not meet training requirements for clinical privileges at Columbus, Ohio-based Mount Carmel Health System, an unnamed source told CBS affiliate WBNS 10 TV.

I'm not concerned about a murderer throwing away his career. I'm concerned about his poor victims. My mom just turned 83. She also just started a master's program in anthropology. She deserves to live.

They all did.

Interesting past history of one time basketball captain William Husel. There were goods and bads but this one fact stood out: "
"Husel pleaded guilty in 1996 to a federal misdemeanor charge after he stored a pipe bomb in a dorm room, a device he later used to blow up a trash can near a health and recreation center on the private school’s Wheeling campus.

Husel tried to frame another person for the crime by planting bomb-making materials in that person’s car, according to U.S. District Court documents filed in the 23-year-old case." (snipped)

Former Mount Carmel doctor William Husel has complicated past

How was he hired anywhere with that history.

The judge is supposed to evaluate risk to the public when setting bond. Since this guy is accused of killing sick people in a hospital, and not people in general population, one would think risk to the public is low unless the guy is allowed to practice medicine somewhere (which is unlikely).

I have a feeling this guy will kill himself rather than getting convicted.

I do remember that back in the mid 1980's, Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus had the same problem with an intern by the name of Michael Swango.

Several patients had died at University Hospital under mysterious circumstances where Michael Swango worked as a floor intern.

But due to lack of physical evidence, prosecutors in Columbus weren't able to charge Michael Swango with murder.

I also remember that this was a major story all over the Columbus news media back then.

This is why I don't leave relatives alone in the hospital. Ever.

This will be very interesting to watch. Laws change, decades ago, integrated marrige was illegal, abortion was illegal, doctors who performed abortions were sentenced to prison sentences.

As the Baby Boomer population continues to age, the Boomers are approaching 72, still fairly healthy. If we add 15 years to this, it will be the oldest Boomers will be in their 80's, approaching 90's. I believe that these laws will change, the Supreme Court will have more cases regarding Self Determination for Choices in Healthcare, Euthanasia and Rational Suicide. I have no doubt a libertarian government will prevail.

Euthanasia is legal in CA and other states. This isn't euthanasia. This is murder. It has nothing to do with self-determination or choice. He choose for them.

We will literally be living in hell if that ever happens....MOO

Euthanasia is legal in Oregon, California, etc., and Belgium, Holland. None of those places are living hells.

This isn't euthanasia. At least not legal euthanasia. It's murder.

I very much hope that legal euthanasia such as California's Aid in Dying law becomes nation wide. My Aunt is a hospice social worker in CA and has not had any patients use it yet but says it brings peace to terminal patients to know that if their suffering becomes to much that they have a way to die on their own terms.

However legal euthanasia has absolutely nothing to do with this case. These patients were murdered by a physician and hospital staff end of story. This is not a Dr. Kevorkian situation where patients came to him asking for help ending their lives.

I should've read ahead!

Murder happens every single day in the United States already. People who have medical power of attorney put their charges in nursing homes, and check every single box on 17 pages, regarding medical treatment for their charge. "No" to any type of care or intervention, including assisted feeding or even helping the patient drink water.

It is terrible to watch a person die from dehydration and starvation. And perfectly legal to do that now. Giving someone a shot for a quick death is far more humane.

They can't withhold care unless a person is terminal/beyond recovery. And yes I agree. I'd rather have someone smother me or overdose me than starve or dehydrate me to death like they do.

It's sick. And painful.

But regardless, doctors don't get to choose to end someone's life without the consent of the patient. And they can't withhold life saving measures unless the patient is terminal AND agreed to such a lack of treatment and/or their next of kin agrees because they lack capacity.

My Uncle killed my Grandmother, who was lucid. She had fallen and broken her hip. She was 94. He decided as her medical POA, that she should have no medical care at all. She didn't have her teeth, so she could not eat most of the food presented to her. I won't go into the rest, but it was absolutely depraved. You wouldn't treat a dog like that.

He had the doctor diagnosis her with "dementia", so she could not change her POA, nor could anything be done. The fact that he gained financially from her death, was meaningless.

True, this doctor hastened the death of these people, but at least they weren't starved to death, dehydrated and in pain.

Husel sues Mount Carmel's parent company over covering his legal costs

08/29/19

"COLUMBUS, Ohio - 10 investigates has learned that Dr. William Husel is suing Mount Carmel's parent company, Trinity Health Corporation, in a dispute over the cost of covering his legal bills.

According to this federal lawsuit, attorneys for Dr. Husel say that Trinity's insurance carrier has covered the cost of the wrongful death lawsuits filed in wake of the patient overdose scandal but is refusing to cover the costs for Husel's criminal trial....

A judge on Wednesday set a June 1 trial date and Jose Baez was introduced as one of Husel's new attorneys along with Diane Menashe.

While Baez acknowledged that Husel reached out to him about representing him in the criminal matter, how it was going to be paid for was not asked nor discussed. This new federal lawsuit appears to make clear that Husel was hoping his insurance policy through Mount Carmel would cover the costs of both the civil and criminal proceedings.

The lawsuit states Trinity Health and its insurer “considered and denied Dr. Husel’s claim to advance and indemnify the costs of a defense in a criminal matter, even though… they have defended Dr. Husel in 36 separate and district civil proceedings arising from the same allegations. THC has therefore, breached its duty to defend separate and apart from (the insurer) breaching its obligation to indemnify.”....

In an August 5 letter sent to Dr. Husel’s civil attorneys, Trinity Health notes “the insurance company has analyzed coverage for the criminal indictments in the criminal matter…”

It goes on to state “…you do not quality as an insured under the policies because you are being charged with “purposeful murder,” which is outside the scope of your duties as an employee of Mount Carmel and therefore, there is no coverage available to you..”..."

Why is this storyteller laughing?

Sounds reasonable to me that his insurance won't pay to defend him. This isn't a negligence case and that's what malpractice insurance is for.

I work for a defense attorney. I love the man and several other defense attorneys. But man.... Baez just makes my skin crawl.

$4.5 million in settlements over deaths tied to Dr. Husel in murder case

Mount Carmel has reached settlements in seven cases to date, plus two that didn't involve lawsuits.

The settlements range from $200,000 to $700,000. In most cases, patients' families get two-thirds or less of the payouts from the hospital's insurers. The rest goes to their attorneys.

The families and the lawyers aren't commenting on the settlements, citing related confidentiality agreements.

"It is our hope that these settlements will bring some measure of closure and comfort to the families," Mount Carmel said in a statement

The hospital system has asked a court to pause proceedings in the other lawsuits while Husel's criminal case is pending. Mount Carmel said it is working with families' attorneys in the civil cases "to resolve these matters fairly" outside of court.
//cough cough bovine scatology

The hospital's ulterior motive is:

Mount Carmel might have an interest in settling cases before Husel's potential criminal trial to avoid the risk that information exposed during such a trial would point to more liability by the hospital system — a scenario that would "add zeroes to the settlement checks," said Michael Benza, a law professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

They want to save money and the families probably want to forget but that monster murdered 25 people. Hopefully, the families receive justice.
